Gio Linh Firebase – Thing to Do in Vietnam Demilitarized Zone

Gio Linh firebase was a strategically vital U.S. military installation located in Quang Tri Province near the Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone. Due to its close proximity to hostile territory, the base frequently endured intense artillery, mortar, and rocket attacks from enemy forces. Ultimately, it played a critical defensive role in regional operations throughout the Vietnam War, including major engagements during the Tet and Easter Offensives.

History of Gio Linh Firebase (Vietnam DMZ)

Gio Linh Firebase (also known as Firebase Alpha 2) was a strategically vital U.S. and South Vietnamese military installation located in Quảng Trị Province, just south of the Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

Established in 1966, it served as a critical eastern anchor for the anti-infiltration barrier known as the McNamara Line and formed part of the famed “Leatherneck Square” defensive network alongside Con Thien, Cam Lo, and Dong Ha. Positioned less than two miles from hostile territory, the base housed heavy artillery—including powerful 175 mm guns—designed to interdict North Vietnamese troop movements.

Because of its proximity to the border, Gio Linh was subjected to relentless mortar, rocket, and artillery bombardments, earning a reputation as one of the most dangerous and heavily contested outposts of the Vietnam War. Troops stationed there spent much of their time surviving in fortified underground bunkers. Today, the former firebase has largely returned to farmland, leaving behind a scarred landscape of deep historical significance.

Gio Linh Firebase (Vietnam DMZ) Today

Gio Linh Combat Base doesn’t exist anymore, and there is nearly nothing to see about it. Today, it’s replaced by residental areas and farm lands in Gio Linh district.

However, in the front of Gio Linh Military Cemetery (Nghia trang liet si Gio Linh) – home to 2.000 Vietnamese solders falling in the battles of Vietnam War, there is a US tank. It’s M41 Walker Bulldog, a light tank served as the primary armor backbone for the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN). In the heavily contested sector near the Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and the McNamara Line, M41 units were deployed to key firebases and strongpoints—such as Gio Linh and Con Thien—to provide mobile direct-fire support, counter-infiltration patrols, and defense against North Vietnamese armor. Because the McNamara Line relied heavily on fixed electronic sensors and static artillery outposts, ARVN mobile armored cavalry squadrons equipped with M41 tanks acted as vital mobile reaction forces, rushing to reinforce vulnerable border installations under heavy bombardment or infantry assault.

Not too far from this tank, there is a memorial of Doc Mieu Combat Base.

The alternative to Gio Linh Combat Base is Khe Sanh Combat Base (65km to the west). There, visitors can see historical aircraft, military tanks, reconstructed bunkers, and remnants of the old airstrip.
