Vandegrift Combat Base (originally established as LZ Stud) was a major U.S. Army and Marine Corps military facility located along Route 9 in Quang Tri Province. Built in 1968 to support Operation Pegasus and the relief of the besieged Khe Sanh Combat Base, it later functioned as a vital logistical and aviation hub for major regional offensives. Occupied sequentially by American and South Vietnamese forces, the base played an instrumental staging role in cross-border operations before being dismantled and eventually abandoned.

History of Vandegrift Combat Base (Vietnam DMZ)
Originally established in early 1968 as Landing Zone Stud by the 1st Cavalry Division, Vandegrift Combat Base was a crucial U.S. military facility located along Route 9 in Vietnam’s Quang Tri Province. Built to support Operation Pegasus and the relief of the besieged Khe Sanh Combat Base, it featured a vital airstrip and logistical hub.
The facility was later occupied by the 9th Marine Regiment and renamed in honor of General Alexander Vandegrift. In 1969, it served as the staging area for Operation Dewey Canyon into the A Shau Valley. Later that year, control was transferred to the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN), who dismantled parts of the base. It was temporarily reoccupied in 1971 for cross-border operations before being permanently abandoned, remaining today as a notable historical site of the Vietnam War.

Vandegrift Combat Base (Vietnam DMZ) Today
Vandegrift Combat Base doesn’t exist anymore, and there is nearly nothing to see about it. Today, it’s replaced by residental areas of Krong Klang town, Dakrong district, Quang Tri province. The population of this town is approx 5.000 people, including Van Kieu and Paco ethnic groups.
Mountains, hills, rivers and other natural features in Vandegrift Combat Base are not largely changed because the area is mostly agricultural lands and cajuput forests.
We recommend going to Khe Sanh Combat Base (25 km away from Vandegrift Combat Base). To get there, visitors need to go along the Highway 9 (towards Lao Bao or Laos).
