The Dong Ha Combat Base was a vital U.S. Marine Corps and Army facility established in Quang Tri Province during the Vietnam War, located just south of the Demilitarized Zone. Operating as a crucial logistics hub and forward airfield, it supported extensive military operations near the border but frequently faced heavy mortar, rocket, and artillery barrages from enemy forces. The base played a pivotal defensive role during major conflicts, including the 1968 Tet Offensive and the intense fighting of the 1972 Easter Offensive.

History of Dong Ha Combat Base (Vietnam DMZ)
Established in 1966 by the U.S. Marine Corps, Dong Ha Combat Base was a critical military installation in Quang Tri Province, positioned just south of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Because of its strategic location near the Cua Viet River and Highway 9, it developed into a vital logistics hub, forward airfield, and naval support facility supporting operations throughout the northern sector.
The base endured frequent rocket, mortar, and artillery attacks from the People’s Army of Vietnam (PAVN). It played a pivotal defensive role during major engagements, including the 1968 Tet Offensive and the fierce fighting of the 1972 Easter Offensive. As U.S. forces gradually withdrew under Vietnamization, control was handed over to South Vietnamese forces. Today, the former base area is part of the modern, rebuilt city of Dong Ha, serving as an important gateway for visitors exploring Vietnam War historical sites.

Dong Ha Combat Base (Vietnam DMZ) Today
Dong Ha Combat Base doesn’t exist anymore, and there is nearly nothing to see about it. Today, it’s replaced by residental areas in Dong Ha city and Fiden Park. This park is a 16-hectare public park named in honor of Cuban leader Fidel Castro. Completed in 2018, it features a central monument with his famous quote, green spaces, and a lake, symbolizing Vietnam-Cuba solidarity and commemorating his historic 1973 visit.
The alternative to Dong Ha Combat Base is Khe Sanh Combat Base (65km to the west). There, visitors can see historical aircraft, military tanks, reconstructed bunkers, and remnants of the old airstrip.
