History of La Vang Holy Land in Vietnam

The history of the Shrine of Our Lady of La Vang in Quảng Trị Province, Vietnam, dates back to 1798. During a period of fierce religious persecution under the Cảnh Thịnh dynasty, terrified Vietnamese Catholics sought refuge in the remote, dense rainforest of La Vang.

While enduring extreme hardship, illness, and hunger, the refugees gathered daily beneath the canopy of a large banyan tree to pray. Tradition holds that they received a miraculous apparition of the Virgin Mary, wearing a traditional Vietnamese áo dài and holding the Infant Jesus. She comforted the sufferers, promised her protection, and pointed out local leaves that could be brewed into medicine to cure their ailments.

In subsequent decades, a small thatched chapel was erected to honor the site, drawing growing numbers of the faithful. Although the original structures were repeatedly destroyed during periods of conflict—most notably the Vietnam War, which left only the scarred bell tower standing—the sanctuary was eventually rebuilt. Today, La Vang stands as a deeply revered minor basilica and a major pilgrimage center for millions of Catholics.

How to Get to La Vang Holy Land in Vietnam

La Vang Holy Land is located in Hai Lang commune, Quang Tri province, Vietnam (formerly Hai Phu commune, Hai Lang district, Quang Tri province).

The closest city to La Vang Holy Land is Hue. The distance from Hue city center is 55 km via QL1A (Highway 1A), and it’s around 75 km if go from Phu Bai International Airport (HUI) – the nearest airport. To go to Hue, the most convenient way is having a flight from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City for an hour. Sometimes visitors choose to fly to Da Nang International Airport because of more flight choices, especially direct international flights.

From Da Nang and Da Nang International Airport (DAD), the distance to La Vang Holy Land is around 150 km. The fastest way to get there is taking a private car/van, and the travel time is nearly 3.5 hours (it means 7 hours for a round trip).

From Da Nang, visitors can take train to Dong Ha from Da Nang Railway Station. The ride is about 5 hours. After arriving at Dong Ha Train Station, it’s needed to take a taxi to reach La Vang (the distance is around 17 km). If like going to La Vang by train, it’s also possible to depart from Hue, Hanoi or Dong Hoi.

From Hoi An, the distance to La Vang Holy Land is around 180 km. The fastest way to get there is taking a private car/van, and the travel time is nearly 4 hours (it means 8 hours for a round trip).
