Khe Sanh Combat Base – Ta Con Airport – DMZ Vietnam Sites

Khe Sanh Combat Base and its integral Ta Con Airfield operated as critical U.S. military strongholds in northwestern Quang Tri Province during the Vietnam War, famously enduring a grueling 77-day siege by the People’s Army of Vietnam in early 1968. Today, the location functions as an open-air war museum and memorial site, housing preserved bunkers, trenches, a small exhibition hall, and vintage aircraft relics along National Route 9. In this article, let’s HoiAn Day Trip Company provide all information about it.

Brief History of Khe Sanh Combat Base

Established initially as a U.S. Army Special Forces camp in 1962, the Khe Sanh Combat Base was later expanded into a major Marine garrison in northwestern Quảng Prị Province, near the Laotian border. Its primary purpose was to monitor infiltration along the Hồ Chí Minh Trail and anchor the western end of the American defense line.

In early 1968, the installation became the focus of intense global attention when the People’s Army of Vietnam (PAVN) launched a massive 77-day siege, bombarding the base with heavy artillery and surrounding its hilltop outposts. Backed by massive air support and relentless B-52 strikes, the besieged garrison held out until a joint relief effort broke the encirclement in April. Despite defending the stronghold successfully, American forces chose to evacuate and demolish the facility later that year. Today, the former base functions as an open-air museum featuring historical aircraft, bunkers, and war relics.
