Ca Lu Combat Base was a significant U.S. Marine Corps and Army logistics and tactical support facility established along Route 9 in western Quang Tri Province during the Vietnam War. Positioned strategically between the coastal plains and the rugged interior near the Laotian border, the base served as a crucial staging area for major operations and artillery support. It played an important role in facilitating troop movements and supply lines, particularly during the redeployment of forces from the nearby Khe Sanh and Vandegrift combat bases.

History of Ca Lu Combat Base (Vietnam DMZ)
Established by the U.S. Marine Corps in 1966, Ca Lu Combat Base was a vital strategic outpost in Vietnam’s Quảng Trị Province, situated along Route 9 near the Laotian border. It served as a critical logistics hub and artillery support base for military operations in the rugged Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and Khe Sanh sectors.
During the 1968 Tet Offensive and the Battle of Khe Sanh, Ca Lu played an essential role as a staging area for reinforcement and resupply operations. Its heavily fortified position allowed Allied forces to project power into hostile terrain and manage critical airmobile operations. As U.S. forces transitioned their strategy and eventually withdrew from Vietnam, the base was handed over to the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN). Today, while little remains of the original infrastructure, Ca Lu stands as a historically significant landmark of the Vietnam War.

Ca Lu Combat Base (Vietnam DMZ) Today
Ca Lu Combat Base doesn’t exist anymore, and there is nearly nothing to see about it. Today, it’s replaced by residental areas of Krong Klang town, Dakrong district, Quang Tri province. The population of this town is approx 5.000 people, including Van Kieu and Paco ethnic groups.
Mountains, hills, rivers and other natural features in Ca Lu Combat Base are not largely changed because the area is mostly agricultural lands and cajuput forests.
We recommend going to Khe Sanh Combat Base (25 km away from Ca Lu Combat Base). To get there, visitors need to go along the Highway 9 (towards Lao Bao or Laos).
