Established in 1966, Cam Lo Combat Base served as a strategic U.S. and South Vietnamese military installation located just south of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). It formed the southwestern corner of the heavily contested “Leatherneck Square” region, acting as a vital staging and artillery support hub for operations against North Vietnamese forces. The base was eventually handed over to the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) before being permanently overrun and captured during the Easter Offensive in 1972.

Cam Lo Combat Base (Vietnam DMZ) Today
Cam Lo Combat Base doesn’t exist anymore, and there is nothing to see about it. Today, it’s replaced by residental areas of Cam Lo town,Cam Lo district, Quang Tri province. The population of this town is approx 8.354 people, including Van Kieu and Paco ethnic groups.
Mountains, hills, rivers and other natural features in Cam Lo Combat Base are not largely changed because the area is mostly agricultural lands and cajuput forests.
On the Vietnamese side, in Cam Lo, visitors can see the Headquarters of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam. The Headquarters of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam, located in Cam Lo District, Quang Tri Province—the first province in the South to be liberated—connected directly with the vast socialist rear of the North and the expansive liberated zone of lower Laos. It possessed a convenient network of waterway and land transportation, most notably National Route 1 and Route 9. This was a favorable location for the Government to comprehensively deploy its leadership activities across all fields, especially foreign affairs.
During the two years from 1973 to 1975, the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam welcomed 49 international delegations and ambassadors who came to present their credentials. Notably, it hosted Cuban leader Fidel Castro and French Communist Party General Secretary Georges Marchais, among others, who visited the liberated zone of Quang Tri. It also organized delegations of representatives to undertake friendship visits, attend international conferences, and garner support from friends across the five continents
We recommend going to Khe Sanh Combat Base (25 km away from Ca Lu Combat Base). To get there, visitors need to go along the Highway 9 (towards Lao Bao or Laos).
