The Quang Tri Combat Base (also known as the Ai Tu Combat Base) was a major U.S. Marine Corps, Army, and South Vietnamese military facility established in Quang Tri Province to support operations just south of the Demilitarized Zone. Built around an airstrip, the installation functioned as a critical logistics, aviation, and staging hub for regional combat missions throughout the Vietnam War. Later handed over to the Army of the Republic of Vietnam, it became the focal point of intense, historic battles during both the 1968 Tet Offensive and the fierce 1972 Easter Offensive.

History of Quang Tri Combat Base (Vietnam DMZ)
Also known as the Ai Tu Combat Base, Quảng Trị Combat Base was established in late 1967 by U.S. forces along Highway 1, situated between Dong Ha and Quang Tri City. Built around a newly constructed airfield, it was created because the northern Đông Hà base proved too vulnerable to artillery fire from across the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
The base served as a vital logistics, aviation, and tactical staging hub for U.S. Marines and Army units during major conflicts, including the 1968 Tet Offensive. As American forces withdrew under Vietnamization, control was transferred to the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN). In 1965, it became a focal point of intense, heavy combat during the 1972 Easter Offensive. Today, little of the original infrastructure remains as the land has transitioned into a modern development area.

Quang Tri Combat Base (Vietnam DMZ) Today
The Quang Tri Combat Base doesn’t exist anymore, and there is nearly nothing to see about it. Today, it’s replaced by residental areas and an industrial zone (Ai Tu).
The alternative to Dong Ha Combat Base is Khe Sanh Combat Base (77 km to the west). There, visitors can see historical aircraft, military tanks, reconstructed bunkers, and remnants of the old airstrip.

How to Get to Quang Tri Combat Base (Vietnam DMZ)
The Quang Tri Combat Base today is located in Trieu Phong commune, Quang Tri province, Vietnam. It’s near Quang Tri Citadel, Thach Han River and other sites associated to the Second Battle of Quang Tri or the defense of the Quang Tri Ancient Citadel, was one of the fiercest and most destructive military engagements of the Vietnam War.
If stay overnight in Dong Ha, visitors need to go southwards for about 10km to see the Quang Tri Combat Base. It’s convenient place to stop on the way from Dong Ha to DMZ sites along Highway 1A such as Hien Luong Bridge, Vinh Moc Tunnels, Quang Tri Citadel, Our Lady of La Vang, Tri Buu Church, Long Hung Church,…
From Hue, the distance to Quang Tri Combat Base (Dong Ha) is around 60km. No matter you plan to see DMZ 1 Route (Vinh Moc Tunnels and Hien Luong Bridge) or DMZ 2 Route (Khe Sanh Combat Base), it’s convenient to stop here.
