The Cua Viet Combat Base was a crucial U.S. Marine, Navy, and Army logistics and support facility located at the mouth of the Cua Viet River in Quang Tri Province. Operating primarily as a vital port for landing craft, it enabled the efficient transport of heavy military supplies and equipment directly to allied forces near the Demilitarized Zone. Because of its strategic coastal location, the base was a frequent target of heavy enemy artillery fire and played a prominent role in major engagements throughout the Vietnam War until its capture in 1975.

History of Cua Viet Combat Base (Vietnam DMZ)
The Cua Viet Combat Base (also known as Camp Kistler) was a vital U.S. and South Vietnamese naval support and logistics facility located at the mouth of the Cua Viet River in Quang Tri Province, just south of the Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Established in 1966, it functioned as the primary logistical lifeline for allied forces operating near the border, allowing landing craft, supply ships, and patrol boats to ferry heavy equipment, fuel, and ammunition directly to coastal combat outposts.
Because of its strategic coastal position near hostile territory, Cua Viet was subjected to continuous enemy artillery bombardments, frogman attacks, and heavy mining of its waterways. Despite the hazardous conditions and harsh monsoon weather, the base remained a critical operational hub until it was captured during the 1975 Spring Offensive.
