Brief History of Lao Bao Prison
Built in 1908 by French colonial authorities, Lao Bao Prison in Vietnam’s remote Quang Tri Province was designed as a high-security detention center to isolate and suppress Vietnamese nationalists and revolutionary leaders.
Situated in a harsh jungle valley bounded by mountains and the Sepon River, the prison was intentionally placed far from urban centers to prevent escapes. The French exploited the punishing tropical climate, heavy malaria, and meager rations to weaken inmates. Prisoners suffered horrific tortures, hard labor, and brutal interrogations aimed at breaking their spirits.
Despite these extreme conditions, Lao Bao became a crucible of revolutionary resilience. Inmates established clandestine communist party cells, transforming the prison into an ideological training ground. Many who survived went on to become prominent leaders in Vietnam’s resistance movements.
Following the August Revolution and the Indochina Wars, the facility was later used by South Vietnamese and American authorities to detain communist fighters. Today, the restored site is recognized as a special national historical monument. It stands as a powerful testament to the suffering, endurance, and ultimate triumph of those who fought for Vietnam’s independence and reunification.
The name Lao Bảo (written in Sino-Vietnamese characters as 堡牢) originates from a historical military outpost established by Vietnamese feudal dynasties near the border with Laos.

Bảo (堡): Means a military post, fortified stockade, or small fortress.

Lao (牢): Means secure, firm, or heavily guarded (historically also associated with pens, stockades, or prisons).
In historical records such as the Đại Nam Nhất Thống Chí (the official geographical records of the Nguyen Dynasty), the area was recorded as a fortified border garrison guarding the western frontier. Over time, the localized pronunciation fused these characters into Lao Bảo, long before the French colonial administration repurposed the isolated valley to build its notorious prison.

How to Get to Lao Bao Prison
Lao Bao Prison is located on Le The Tiet Road, Lao Bao commune, Quang Tri province, Vietnam. If stay overnight in ‘Lao Bao Town’ or do a visa, visitors can get there easily.
From Dong Ha, the distance to Lao Bao Prison is 85km. The most popular ways to go are taking a private car/van, and the drive will be around 2 hours. On the way, we recommend seeing Khe Sanh Combat Base, The Rockpile, Dakrong Bridge, Camp Carroll,…. or even Laos if possible.
From Hue, the distance to Lao Bao Prison is 150km. Visitors should combine with Khe Sanh Combat Base, a major historical site in the Vietnam Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
There is no tours at all to Lao Bao Prison.
