What to Expect in Vietnam’s Heroic Mother Statue?
The Thu Mother Statue
Vietnam’s Heroic Mother Statue (or Vietnamese Heroic Mother Monument) is a must see attraction in Tam Ky city. Spanning over 16 hectares, on the slope of Cam Mountain (the Forbidden Mountain), it’s one of the largest war memorials in the country. It’s built to commemorate and honor 140,000 Vietnamese heroic mothers (a title from Vietnam government for mothers who have made numerous contributions and lost many children who fought for the country during the French and American wars). Quang Nam province, where there’re over 15,200 mothers rewarded (more than anywhere in Vietnam), is chosen to place this building.
The highlight of the Vietnamese Heroic Mother Statue in Tam Ky is the building portrays Nguyen Thi Thu Mother (shortly Thu Mother, Me Thu), a local woman whose husband, sons and daughters fought or lost in the French and American wars in Vietnam. Born in 1904 and passed away on 10th December 2010, she had 12 children, including 1 daughter (oldest) and 11 sons. Nine of them fell in the battles in order to gain the independence and reunification for Vietnam. Her first child, Le Thi Tri is also a veteran and a Vietnam heroic mother because her husband and two children lost in the war. Additionally, in the gardens of her house, there are hiding places for leaders of the communist party in the region as well (this house today becomes a historical site).
Statue of Thu Mother at Tam Ky is designed by Dinh Gia Thang artist. It’s constructed from 27th July 2009 to 24th March 2015. She is in the middle, and her family members all look to her. In the front, there is a lake.
Inside the Statue of Thu Mother, visitors will find a museum (opened in anniversaries, not everyday). It exhibits photos, artifacts and provides the information about Vietnam’s heroic mothers.
In the front of the Thu Mother Statue, there are 8 columns. Each one is 11,2 meters tall. Here, number 8 symbolizes the unification, richness and peace as well as eight words which President Ho Chi Minh gave to Vietnamese women (“brave, indomitable, gentle, hardworking”).
The park around the Statue of Thu Mother is filled by trees, flowers and grasslands. Visitors can find some pavilions to sit down and take a break while walking around.
Next to the Vietnam’s Heroic Mother Statue, that’s Quang Nam martyrs cemetery where about 65,000 Vietnamese solders are buried and honored. It’s opened on 27th July 2015, to commemorate Vietnam’s Martyr Day. The memorial building is designed by Pham Van Hang artist.

Vietnamese Heroic Mother Museum
This museum lies within the Statue of Thu Mother. It’s opens from 7:30 to 11:00 AM and 1:00 to 4:30 PM everyday.
At the museum, visitors will get information about the most typical Vietnamese heroic mothers during the Vietnam War and other female heroes in Vietnamese history too:
– Au Co Mother: according to Vietnamese legend, Âu Cơ is the mythical mother who laid a sac of one hundred eggs, from which all the people of Vietnam were born. Her story symbolizes the ancestral unity of the nation, as she and her husband Lạc Long Quân divided their children to populate both the highlands and the coastal regions.
– Ba Trieu (Lady Trieu): a fierce Vietnamese warrior who led a legendary uprising against the occupying Eastern Wu dynasty in the 3rd century, famously declaring her desire to ride the wind and crush the waves. She is celebrated as a timeless icon of independence, remembered for her indomitable spirit and her vow to never bow her head or live as a servant.
– Hai Ba Trung (Trung Sisters): heroic Vietnamese leaders who led a fierce, successful rebellion against Chinese Han Dynasty rule in the first century AD. They are celebrated today as national icons of independence and female strength, remembered for their legendary bravery in securing Vietnam’s brief period of sovereignty.
– Suot Mother (Nguyễn Thị Suốt): a heroic Vietnamese woman from Quảng Bình who fearlessly ferried soldiers, wounded troops, and supplies across the Nhật Lệ River under heavy enemy fire during the Vietnam War. Her unwavering bravery and self-sacrifice earned her the title of Hero of Labor, and she remains a legendary symbol of maternal devotion and patriotism in Vietnamese history.
– Nhu Mother (Lê Thị Nhu): a courageous Vietnamese heroine in Đà Nẵng who sacrificed her life to protect revolutionary soldiers from enemy capture during the war. Her legacy stands as an enduring symbol of unwavering patriotism and selfless maternal protection in the face of immense adversity. See information about Nhu Mother Monument
– Thu Mother (Nguyễn Thị Thứ): a profoundly courageous Vietnamese mother who lost nine sons, one son-in-law, and two grandsons to the wars, becoming a revered symbol of maternal sacrifice and national resilience. Her life is commemorated as a testament to the immense pain and enduring strength of the “Vietnamese Heroic Mother” archetype.
– Đặng Thùy Trâm: a brave and idealistic young doctor who served on the front lines during the Vietnam War, and whose posthumously discovered wartime diaries became a global sensation. Her writings offer an intensely personal and moving look at the conflict, revealing her unwavering dedication to her patients and her enduring hope for peace.
