Performances in My Son Sanctuary Show
Offering Holy Water to Temple (Dancing)
The first performance in the My Son Sanctuary show is ‘offering the holy water to the temple’. In which, a group of Cham girls who wear a beautiful traditional costume, will carry a pot of holy freshwater to the temple. In festivals or ceremonies of their ethnicity (for example, Kate festival), the water is one of the most important offspring. It will be used to wash the statue of the god (popularly Shiva god) or the king before the main festival day takes place. In history, Cham kings used the water from Khe The stream in My Son’s valley, in their ceremonies to honor Shiva god at temples.
Saranai Flute Performance
In the second performance, a Cham male artist will perform his skills in blowing Saranai flute. It’s one of traditional double-reed wind instruments in his ethnicity’s culture. He wears a sarong, Cham long dress for men and a tanrak on his head, Cham’s turban for men. Behind thim, there is a group of young Cham boys who play Ginang drums. From the beginning to the end of the performance, their music is perfectly blended, just like how they play in festivals or ceremonies at temples. The audience keeps saying wow and can’t take their eyes off the stage. This is a great chance for visitors to know how Cham people celebrate their important occasions.
More information about Saranai flute: This flute is one of the essential musical instruments in traditional Cham festivals and ceremonies, and represents lips; Artists often blow it to start a performance/show; It takes them years to practice and their practices will occur at a place far from the village because people believe that sound of the flute attracts the ghost; To make Saranai flute, an ivory or buffalo horn would be used in the past, but now, fine tamarin wood replaces them;
More information about the Ginang drum: it’s a 70cm-long cyder shaped percussion instrument, made of ironwood, and is an own creativity of Cham people living in Ninh Thuan province. Cham men will play it by hand or a stick during traditional festivals and events, and often accompany singgings. In the belief of ethnicity, the Ginang drum, Paranung drum, and Saranai flute represent heaven, earth, and humans. These instruments always appear together.
Apsara Dance
‘Apsara’ is the beautiful female celestial singer and dancer in Indian mythology. This fairy lady was carved on the stone, to decorate temples at My Son. Apsara dancers symbolize values of grace, beauty, and spirituality;
Visitors will watch the dancing from Apsara ladies in the last performance of the My Son Sanctuary show. In the beginning, they hide in the long cloth, making the audience want to know who they are and what they are going to do. After spinning some times, they appear and perform such flexible and skillful movements. They give us posings that look just like the carvings at the temple. Sure, the viewers can’t stop looking at them, and clapping their hands.
The Apsara dance is also seen in the show at Hoi An Traditional Art Performance House daily (included by ‘Hoi An Old Town ticket’).
My Son Sanctuary Show Times & Duration
The daily show at My Son Sanctuary takes place at 10 AM, 10:45 AM, 2 PM, and 3:30 PM. It lasts 15-20 minutes. Depending on the weather (or season), these times may be earlier or later. To know the latest timetable, visitors should browse the official social media pages of My Son Sanctuary or the official webpage of the management board or ask local experts/travel companies. In the peak tourist seasons, more performances are added, especially in the morning. The reason is that many visitors won’t enjoy witnessing the show if it is too crowded at the treasure.
If there are less than 20 people in the Theatre, the show won’t be available. Visitors can see it in the next slot.
We advise coming to the theatre at least 10 mins before the show time, to have a good location to watch performances and take photos. Chairs are also limited, so if traveling with elderly or kids, coming early is a thing you should do.
Additionally, at Temple G, a minishow also is organized everyday. It’s available at 9:15 AM and 2:15 PM. In which, visitors have the chance to see a party of Cham ladies and men wearing beautiful traditional costumes, performing awesome dances and playing musical instruments fluently. This show is short, about 10 mins. After it, the viewers can take good pictures with artists.
Where to Watch the Show at My Son Sanctuary?
The theatre where visitors can watch ‘My Son show’ is near B-C-D temples and H temple. It’s quite far from the entrance of My Son Sanctuary. On the map at My Son, this theatre is called ‘public stage’.
To get there, from the main entrance, visitors firstly need to walk to the buggy station for a transfer (past My Son Museum, go over the bridge).
After the buggy stops, visitors will choose one of two paths to go further inside My Son’s valley and get to the theatre.
When is the Best Time to Watch My Son Sanctuary Show?
To watch the show and sightsee temples properly, visitors need to time the visit well. Our advice is to start the trip to My Son Sanctuary at least 1,5hrs earlier than the show times (if stay in Da Nang or Hoi An). After arriving, just go to the theatre first and wait for the show then. Close to the theatre, there is a store selling cold drinks, snacks, books, and souvenirs, to see and buy. Toilet isn’t nearby either. If still have enough time, visitors can go to Temple H sitting on the top of the hill behind the theatre.
For example, if you want to go in the morning, and don’t want to miss the show at My Son Sanctuary. You can go at 8-8:30 AM or 9:15-9:30 AM. After watching performances, you can begin sightseeing the temples. The first one should be Group B-C-D, and then Group A, Group G, Group E-F, and Temple K.
If want to see the show after the temples, you can go at 8 AM.
