Better to Know about Tinh Xa Ngoc Huong on Cham Island

Tinh Xa Ngoc Huong is a Buddhist temple at Bai Huong Village on Cham Island. It’s close to Ancestral Temple of Swallow Nest Gatherers.

Today, local people worship Shakyamuni Biddha at Tinh Xa Ngoc Huong. Shakyamuni Buddha was a spiritual sage from ancient India who attained full enlightenment after renouncing his princely life to discover the root cause of human suffering. He founded Buddhism by teaching a path of moderation, mindfulness, and ethical living, aimed at achieving a state of ultimate peace known as Nirvana.

In the front of the worshipping hall, visitors will see a stone statue of Lady Buddha (or Godess of Mercy). This buddha is often associated with the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara or Guan Yin, is a symbol of infinite compassion and mercy who hears the cries of all sentient beings. She is frequently depicted as a towering, elegant figure in white robes, standing as a protector for sailors and a spiritual guardian of the sea.

In the garden of Tinh Xa Ngoc Huong, there is also a stutue of Reclining Buddha. It represents the historical Buddha during his last moments on earth, depicting him lying on his right side as he enters Parinirvana, or final liberation from the cycle of rebirth. This iconic pose symbolizes the ultimate state of peace and serenity, serving as a reminder to followers of the transition from physical existence to spiritual transcendence.

It’s possible to see holy trees in Buddhism like bodhi tree, banyan tree, cannonball tree,… The cannonball tree (Couroupita guianensis) is frequently planted at Buddhist temples and is often associated with the Buddha’s birth and passing because its unique, fragrant flowers resemble the sacred Sal tree mentioned in scriptures. While not the botanically original Sal tree of ancient India, its striking blossoms and hood-like petals have made it a modern symbolic substitute in many Southeast Asian spiritual landscapes.

How to Get to Tinh Xa Ngoc Huong on Cham Island

Tinh Xa Ngoc Huong is located in Bai Huong Village on the largest island of Cham Islands archipelago – Hon Lao, approximately 15 kilometers off the coast of Hoi An in central Vietnam.

To get to Hon Lao, visitors can take boat from Cua Dai Port (speed boat or ferry boat or local wooden fishing boat). After 20-30 minutes, visitors are dropped off at Bai Lang Pier. From this place, it’s needed to rent a motorbike or motorbike rider to Bai Huong Village (5km from Bai Lang). The price is 200.000-400.000 VND for a round trip.

From Cua Dai Port, visitors can hire a private speed boat to Bai Huong and then visit Tinh Xa Ngoc Huong, but this way is quite expensive.

Tinh Xa Ngoc Huong is not in the itinerary of any tours to Cham Island, therefore visitors need to stay overnight if like to see Tinh Xa Ngoc Huong. If stay in Bai Huong, just walk to Tinh Xa Ngoc Huong. It’s on the pier and the Ancestral Temple for Swallow Nest Gatherers (Mieu To Nghe Yen). If stay in Bai Lang, take a motorbike.
