How to Get to Cham Island from Hanoi
Distance
To reach the Cham Islands, visitors need to take boat from Cua Dai Port in Hoi An for 20-30 minutes. So, the distance from Hanoi to Cham Island is exactly the distance to Cua Dai Port. It’s around 800km.
Hanoi to Cham Island by Flight
There is no airport on Cham Islands today. It has a couple of heliports that are used for military and residents (tourists can not come to the islands by air directly).
The closest airport to Cham Islands is the Da Nang International Airport (DAD). From Hanoi, visitors can find many direct flights in the day to go to Da Nang from major local airlines like Vietnam Airline, Vietjet, Bamboo Airways,… The flight duration is 1 to 1,5 hours.
In Hanoi, the distrance to the Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) from Hanoi Old Quarters (the most popular area to stay for tourists) is roughly 25km. Visitors can get there by private car/taxi, public bus or sharing shuttle bus. The driver is from 45 to 60 minutes. Because the flight from Hanoi to Da Nang is within Vietnam (domestic flight), it’s needed to come to Terminal 1 of Noi Bai Airport (recommend at least 2 hours in advance).
After landing at the Da Nang Airport (Terminal 1), the quickest way to reach Cham Island is by private vehicle. The distance from the airport to Cua Dai Port is some 30km. So, it takes visitors 45-60 mins.
If combine the flight and the boat, total travel time from Hanoi to Cham Islands is 3.5 to 4.5 hours.
Hanoi to Cham Island by Train
From Hanoi, visitors can take train at Hanoi Railway Station to Da Nang Railway Station. After that, take a car to Cua Dai Port and then boat to Cham Islands.
From Da Nang Railway Station, the distance to Cua Dai Port in Hoi An is around 30km. Travel time is 45-60 minutes depending on traffic and weather, and generally, it’s smooth due to good city planning.
The last boats go to Cham Island is at 13:30. It means that visitor have to be in Da Nang 12:15 latest (it’s needed to be in Cua Dai Port at least 15 minutes). Other boats depart at 8:00 and 9:00.
Currently, from Hanoi, there are 2 overnight trains to Da Nang that arrives before 12:15: SE3 and SE19.
+ SE3: leave Hanoi at around 7 pm, arrive Da Nang at around 10:30 am on next day. If this train is on time, you have 2 hour, and if like, on the way to the port, visit Marble Mountains and have some nacks or light lunch. It takes 1-1,5 hours to hike Marble Mountains. Unless, check things to do near Da Nang Train Station if you don’t like a tight itinerary.
+ SE19: leave Hanoi at around 7:45 pm, arrive Da Nang at around 11:45 am on next day. If take this train, you can come to the port in time for the last boat. However, due to long distance train journey, the train might stop at Da Nang later than scheduled.
For that reason, SE3 has more advantages than SE19.
Hanoi to Cham Island by Bus
Visitors often choose a sleeper bus to go from Hanoi to Da Nang. It leaves Hanoi in the evening and then arrive Da Nang after a night (early morning) at the Da Nang Central Bus Station. This station is further than the airport and the train station. If take a private car/taxi, it takes 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes. So it’s possible to catch the first boat to Cham Island 8:00 am. If want a slower traveling pace, choose 9:00 am boat.
After reaching the Cham Island, for sure it’s needed to go to the homestay first for dropping the luggage. You can hire a motorbike there first and then visit a beach, have lunch before check in at 2 pm. In the afternoon, take a rest at homestay and when it’s cooler (after 3 pm), see another beach.
