Au Thuyen in Cham Island is a vital man-made harbor and storm shelter in Bai Lang, the main fishing village. In Vietnam, storm shelters like the Au Thuyen are specifically engineered to safeguard fishing fleets from the intense typhoons that frequently strike the central coast. These maritime shelters consist of deep, enclosed basins surrounded by heavy stone breakwaters that neutralize powerful wave energy and high-velocity winds. Beyond infrastructure for boats, the government also maintains a network of reinforced communal buildings and elevated concrete bunkers to protect coastal residents from storm surges and extreme weather.
Typhoon season in Hoi An typically occurs from September through December, with the highest frequency of heavy rainfall and potential flooding usually peaking in October and November.
Along Au Thuyen, there are some coffee shops and restaurants (less busy than the ones in Bai Lang, especially in the morning when day trippers flock the area). It’s interesting to have a traditional Vietnamese coffee here and watch local life.
If like to walk to Bai Ong Beach from Bai Lang, the Au Thuyen is a good stop on the way. Near its entrance, visitors can find the perfect place for watching sunset during sunny months, and also a road (short cut) to the beach.

How to Get to Au Thuyen on Cham Island
Au Thuyen is located on the largest island of Cham Islands – Hon Lao, approximately 15 kilometers off the coast of Hoi An in central Vietnam. On this island, it’s in the heart of Bai Lang, the main fishing village.
To get to Au Thuyen, visitors can take boat from Cua Dai Port first (speed boat or ferry boat or local wooden fishing boat) for 20-30 minutes. Visitors are dropped off at Bai Lang Pier (or the Cham Island Harbour). From this place, walk or get a motorbike ride to Au Thuyen (as well as Hai Tang Pagoda, Xom Cam Well, Cham Island Marine Museum, Bai Ong Beach,…)
Au Thuyen is half day from Bai Lang (where the boat arrives Cham Island) and Bai Ong, one of the most beautiful beaches.
