History of Phan Chu Trinh Street in Hoi An

During the French colonial time, Phan Chu Trinh Street was known as ‘Rue de Minh Huong’ in French or ‘Minh Huong Road’ in English. Minh Huong means ‘those who worship the Ming dynasty (in China)’ or ‘people of Ming (dynasty) origin’. Near the east end of this road, there is ‘Minh Huong Confucius Temple’ or Van chi Minh Huong.

On 15th May 2023, Phan Chu Trinh Street became a night pedestrian street (except for a 120-meters-long stretch from Nguyen Hue Street to Hoang Dieu Street).

Today, although the official name of the street is ‘Phan Chu Trinh’ but there are still many locals calling it ‘Phan Chau Trinh’ because Chau is the way southern Vietnamese people pronounce Chu.

Better to Know about Phan Chu Trinh (Historical Figure)

Phan Chu Trinh (or Phan Chau Trinh) is a Vietnamese nationalist. He was borned on 9th September 1872 in Tay Loc village, Tam Loc commune, Phu Ninh district, Quang Nam province. He was the 3rd son in the family of Phan Van Binh, a military mandarin who supported the Can Vuong movement (from 1885 to 1896) to fight against the French colonial regime.

In 1990, Phan Chu Trinh became a senior bachelor and then worked for the government. Five years later, he resigned his position as a mandarin and then traveled to many places in Vietnam. Later, he went to Japan with Phan Boi Chau (another patriot) as part of the Dong Du movement in which Vietnamese young people learnt in Japan and then returned to help the country.

On 24th March 1926, Phan Chu Trinh passed away in Saigon (today Ho Chi Minh City). His funeral procession attracted around 30,000 Vietnamese people and led to protests on the street which demanded an end to French rule over the country.

At 72 Phan Chu Trinh Street in the center of Da Nang city, there is a memorial house constructed to honor Phan Chu Trinh. In his hometown, a memorial complex was also built and then became a national historical site.
