History & Architecture of Vien Giac Pagoda in Hoi An
Based on information on memorial steles and ancient artifacts at Vien Giac Pagoda, historians confirmed that it has been stranded on the current place since 1841 (Tu Le hamlet, Cam Pho village). Its former location was in Xuyen Trung hamlet, Cam Pho village (nowadays Cam Nam ward). The reason to move was the erosion of the Thu Bon River. Someone believes that this pagoda was constructed on the remains of a Chinese temple. It’s also known as Cam Ly Pagoda.
In the 19th century, there was a river (Thu Bon river) in the front of Vien Giac Pagoda, but later, the river bank was extended by alluvial. Later, people came to live. For that reason, today we can see a market and living quarters surrounding it.
About the architecture, Vien Giac Pagoda has a triple gate with a small park in the front, a courtyard with lots of bonsai trees, the worshipping hall in the centre, the west house, the east house and the ancestor hall. In 1990, in the latest restoration, wooden structures of the worshipping hall, the west house and the east house were replaced by concrete cement. The hall is used to worship Phat Thich Ca (Shakyamuni Buddha), Quan The Am Bo Tat (Lady Buddha, Guanyin) and Bo Tat Dai The Chi (Mahasthamaprapta Buddha). In the ancestor hall, people worship Bodhidharma, a semi-legendary Buddhist monk who lived during the 5th or 6th century CE. He is traditionally credited as the transmitter of Chan Buddhism to China, and is regarded as its first Chinese patriarch.
Since 1950, Vien Giac Pagoda has been managed by Buddhist monks, instead of local inhabitants residing in Cam Pho village.
