History of Nguyen Thai Hoc Street in Hoi An
Nguyen Thai Hoc Street was constructed in 1841, parallel to Tran Phu Street (formerly ‘Japanese Bridge Road’) and the north bank of Hoai River. It may be called the Riverside Road or Quay at that time. In French colonial time, It’s named ‘Rue de Cantonais’ in French or ‘Cantonnese Road’ in English or Duong Quang Dong in Vietnamese because one of its ends was the Cantonese Assembly Hall. Until the late 19th century, the northern side of this street was lined by tube wooden houses arranged side-by-side in tight (the quarter looks like the one on Bach Dang Street right now). And, its southern side is the quay or wharf where boats dock to load and upload the goods. For that reason, Nguyen Thai Hoc Street still preserves many fine wooden constructions and temples.
In 1872, the Rue de Fukien (the Fujian Road, Duong Phuc Kien) was constructed. After that, the Cantonese Road was not the riverside road anymore.
After 1975, when Vietnam was unified, the Cantonese Road was named after ‘Nguyen Thai Hoc’, a revolutionary and independent activist.
