Better to Know about Kazik (Kazimierz Kwiatkowski)
Kazimierz Kwiatkowski Life Events
Kazimierz Kwiatkowski (man) was borned on 2nd July 1944 in Poland. He was the only child in his family, and his parents are farmers.
At age of 15, he studied at the boarding school at Zamosc, Poland and graduated in 1963. After that, he studied architecture at Krakow Polytechnic University, and then graduated in 1969.
From 1972 to 1974, he worked as a designer at the branch of PP PKZ, a state-owned company founded in 1950 and specialized in complex restoration of architectural monuments and handicraft. Until November 1979, he worked at another place, and then returned to the PP PKZ.
In 1981, Kazimierz Kwiatkowski was assigned to lead the monuments restoration mission in Vietnam after this country was badly damaged by the wars. He was the only expert in his team.
On 19th March 1997, Kazimierz Kwiatkowski passed away at a hotel in Hue city, due to heart attack, while participating in restoration of The Mieu Temple within the Imperial City of Hue. His remains were later transferred to home country, Poland.
Kazimierz Kwiatkowski with My Son
In 1982, Kazimierz Kwiatkowski came to My Son Sanctuary. Previously, the landmine was cleared in this place, and the path leading from the closest village was also opened, as requested by the Vietnamese government. Instead of staying in the hotel in the city, he chose to stay in a cottage near the temples of My Son. Here, firstly he and the team removed invasive plants at standing buildings, and ‘clean up’ them before doing any restorations. The original (surviving) structures were kept as much as possible. Every detail of towers, and sculptures were recorded carefully and drawn.
In 1994, Kazimierz Kwiatkowski restored D1, D2 houses and used them to preserve/exhibit stone sculptures at My Son Sanctuary. These exhibitions are still in use today.
In 1991, after the fall of communism in Eastern European countries, financial resource for archaeological and restoration activities at My Son Sanctuary were determined. To continue them, he called for creation of funds. One of sponsors at that time was the Association of Friends of Cham Culture in Germany.
On 4th December 1999, My Son Sanctuary became a Unesco world heritage site. This event was the turning point in the history of the site itself. After that, it’s known better by both locals and foreigners. My Son now is one of the most visited attractions in the area.
In the near future, a memorial statue of Kazimierz Kwiatkowski will be built in My Son Sanctuary, to commemorate his merits, the same as Hoi An.
Not only My Son Sanctuary, Kazimierz Kwiatkowski and his team also participated in restoration at many other Cham towers/temples in Vietnam, such as Ponagar Temple at Nha Trang.
Kazimierz Kwiatkowski with Hoi An
In July 1982, Kazimierz Kwiatkowski and his interpreter visited Hoi An for the first time. According to them, they went on a beach holiday. During the trip, he was warmly welcomed by Hoi An leaders, and had a walk through Hoi An’s old town. Here, he fell in love this ‘unchanged’ town. After that, he used his days off in My Son Sanctuary, to go to Hoi An, to draw its ancient monuments and houses without a pay. From late 1982 to 1984, Kazimierz Kwiatkowski and two Vietnamese experts from the Central Restoration of Monuments of Vietnam, had the drawing for all of them as well as maps about the entire town. In 1985, thanks to his team’s documents, the Hoi An Ancient Town was recognized to be Vietnam’s national monument. Right after that, the first ever international meeting about it took place, attracting more than 200 historians, scholars, and scientists.
Kazimierz Kwiatkowski was one of persons who paved the way to make the Hoi An Ancient Town ‘recognized’ and ‘protected’ by law. In 1999, this place became a Unesco world heritage site, at the same time with My Son Sanctuary where he spent many years to save amazing Cham towers.
Legacy of Kazimierz Kwiatkowski in Hoi An
There is one statue of Kazimierz Kwiatkowski constructed in the heart of Hoi An Ancient Town in 2007, to commemorate his day of death (the 10th). In near future, memorial statue and monument will be constructed in My Son Sanctuary as well.
Memory Statue of Kazimierz Kwiatkowski in Hoi An Old Town
The Memory Statue of Kazimierz Kwiatkowski and the surrounding park were built on 31st December 2007, 10 years after he passed away. It’s a stone bust with a height of 2,2 meters, and a width of 1,9 meters. The piece of stone originates from Thanh Hoa province, in northern central Vietnam, and was carved by artisans of Non Nuoc Stone Carving Village.
On every 18th March, Hoi An city leaders and people commemorate Kazimierz Kwiatkowski at Kazik Park. This commemoration occurs one day before his day of death (19th March), according to Vietnamese traditional culture. Both locals and tourists can attend if visit Hoi An on the day.
In the Kazik Park, there is a fresh-water well which is still in use. It’s one of 80 old wells in the Hoi An Ancient Town world heritage area. Visitors can see another well at the entrance of the Hoi An Central Market, or Ba Le Well.
In the traditional Full Moon Lantern Festival, at Kazik Park, visitors can play a Vietnamese folk game of breaking pots. In which, the player will be blindfolded and hold a stick. To win, he or she needs to use that stick to break hanging clay pots. As they can not see anything, other people will tell him/her how to walk to pots. See more information & details
The toilet at the Kazik Park is free to use, but visitors will drop a small amount of money in the box, to ‘pay’ for those who clean up. It’s needed to take your shoes off, and wear a sandal to go inside.
In the future, a statue of Kazimierz Kwiatkowski will be built at My Son Sanctuary.
