Where is Hoi An’s Pedestrian Area?
Hoi An’s pedestrian area is in the Hoi An Ancient Town world heritage area that lies in the centre of Hoi An city. It’s designated to reduce noise and pollution in the heritage zone, helping to preserve it. The city aimed to make the town become safe to visitors while staying in, due to no motorbikes and cars. Furthermore, visitors can enjoy wandering around, taking pictures, going shopping or trying street foods, making their time at Hoi An much more awesome. Bicycles are still allowed to go around this area. No surprise, Hoi An has become the most bicycle-friendly city in Vietnam.
The pedestrian area of Hoi An is surrounded by 4 roads: Tran Hung Dao St in the north, Cao Hong Lanh St in the west, Hoang Dieu St in the east, and Nguyen Phuc Chu St in the south.
The first walking street was opened in June 2004. In 2017, many streets inside the Hoi An Ancient Town world heritage became ‘walking and non-motorized vehicles roads’. In May 2023, 3-kilometers-long Phan Chu Trinh street was the newest walking street in Hoi An. In near future, more walking streets will be added.
Timing for Hoi An Pedestrian Area
Everyday, the Hoi An pedestrian area ‘opens’ from 9 to 11:30 am, and 3 to 9:30 pm, except Phan Chu Trinh street. The brand-new walking street has its opening hours from 5:30 to 9:30 pm.
During these hours, visitors can just walk or ride non-motorized vehicles (such as bicycle, cyclo/rickshaw) to get around the Hoi An’s pedestrian area.
Meaning that before 9 am, from 11:30 am to 3 pm, and after 9:30-10 pm, people can ride motorbikes in the area. Cars are always banned
List of Walking Streets in Hoi An Old Town
Tran Phu Street
Tran Phu street is the oldest and the most important road in Hoi An Ancient Town. It’s 700 meters long, running from the Japanese Bridge to Hoang Dieu street (or the Hoi An Fabric/Cloth Market). However, Tran Phu walking street is only 550 meters, between the Japanese Bridge and the Hoi An Central Market.
Today, Tran Phu street is named after the first general secretary of the Communist party of Vietnam – Tran Phu (1904-1931). In history, it’s called ‘the Japanese Road’ because a bridge built by Japanese people is on it. In the Vietnam war, its name was ‘Cuong De’ (man), a Vietnamese revolutionary and nationalist lived from 1882 to 1951.
Tran Phu walking street is the most beautiful road in the Hoi An pedestrian area. Lots of the town’s cultural and historical landmarks line it (because it’s the first road of the town, and not flooded in the rainy season). There are the Japanese Bridge, Museum of Sa Huynh Culture, the Cantonese Assembly Hall, Kazik Park, Duc An Old House, Quan Thang Old House, Museum of Trade Ceramics, Trung Hoa Assembly Hall, the Fujian Assembly Hall, the Hoi An Central Market, Quan Cong Temple, Minh Huong Communal House, the Hainan Assembly Hall, the Hoi An Cloth/Fabric Market.
Visitors can go to the Hoi An Central Market, park in its entrance or near Quan Cong Temple, and then walk along Tran Phu street.

Nguyen Thai Hoc Street
Running parallel to Tran Phu street, to the south, Nguyen Thai Hoc street is the second oldest road in Hoi An Ancient Town. It’s inaugurated in 1840, and named ‘the Cantonese road’ by French people. This street today is 500 meters long, stretching from the crossroad of Hai Ba Trung St to the Hoi An Central Market. It’s completely designated to be a walking street.
Nguyen Thai Hoc street is named after a Vietnamese revolutionary and independent activist who lived from 1902 to 1930. He was the founder of the Vietnam Nationalist Party, and the Yen Bai uprising against French colonists in 1930.
Along Nguyen Thai Hoc street, visitors can see these places: Old House of Tan Ky, Diep Dong Nguyen House, Museum of Traditional Medicine, Museum of Folklore (main entrance), the Upper Five-elements Temple, the Lower Five-element Temple (Hy Hoa Temple).
Visitors can go to the Hoi An Central Market, find Tran Quy Cap street, and then park there, to walk along Nguyen Thai Hoc street. This road is less busy than Tran Phu street and Bach Dang street (riverside street).
Bach Dang Street
Running along the Hoai River, Bach Dang street is the most poetic and romantic road in the Hoi An Ancient Town. It’s 750 meters long, going from the Japanese Bridge to Hoang Dieu street (or the Hoi An Fabric/Cloth Market). However, Bach Dang walking street is only 500 meters long, between the bridge and the Hoi An Central Market (crossroad of Tran Quy Cap St). It’s one of the most beautiful streets in Hoi An. Back to the history, this road was built in 1878, in the reign of Tu Duc king.
Along Bach Dang street, visitors can see these attractions: Hoi An Traditional Art Performance House (a show occurs here several times a day), Museum of Folklore.
Bach Dang walking street is named after a river where Vietnamese people defeated Chinese invaders in 938, in 981, and Mongolian invaders in 1288. These battles symbolize the indomitable spirit of Vietnamese people to defend the country.
Along Bach Dang street quay, near the Hoi An Central Market, visitors can find cruise boats if want to go on a boat trip on the Thu Bon River. The shortest trip is about 15 mins, and the best one may be in the sunset. One boat here can carry 12-15 passengers. The price depends on the duration and occasionally the number of people. See more information & details
In the evening, this street is crowded by visitors who come to see lots of boats and shimmering floating lanterns on the river. If want to do the boat ride, there are some ticket booths along it. The price is 150,000 or 200,000 VND, depending on the number of passengers. While on board, visitors have a great chance to enjoy the gorgeous beauty of the town, take beautiful photos/videos or release wishing lanterns. See more information & details
Near An Hoi Bridge, there is an outdoor playground/stage where visitors can play folk game (named ‘Bai Choi’) with locals. Players will sit in bamboo huts or on the mats on the yard, keep 3 cards, and follow singings of the hosts (in both Vietnamese and English). In 2017, this folk card game and art performance was inscribed by Unesco as humanity’s intangible cultural heritage. See more information & details
Nguyen Hoang Street
On an island opposite to the Hoi An Ancient Town, Nguyen Hoang street is 300 meters long. It’s exactly the Hoi An Night Market in everynight. Meaning that it’s completely designated to be a walking street.
Nguyen Hoang street is named after the first Nguyen lord who ruled the southern park of Vietnam from 1558 to 1613.
At the end of Nguyen Hoang street, visitors can find a boat station. Here, it’s possible to meet boat’s owners and depart for a relaxing boat trip on the Thu Bon River.
Phan Chu Trinh Street
To the north of Tran Phu street, Phan Chu Trinh street is the newest walking street in Hoi An (has opened in May 2023). It’s 970 meters long, running from the Hoi An Protestant Church on Cao Hong Lanh St to Hoang Dieu St (a parking lot). Both locals and visitors often are confused about ‘Phan Chu Trinh’ and ‘Phan Chau Trinh’. Local residents prefer the second name because it’s exactly the right way they speak daily, although the first name is the official one.
Phan Chu Trinh street is named after a Vietnamese nationalist who lived from 1872 to 1926. He was borned in Phu Ninh district, Quang Nam province. He was known as one of the leaders of the Duy Tan movement against French colonists from 1903 to 1908. Duy Tan means ‘revolution’ in Vietnamese.
Along Phan Chu Trinh walking street, visitors can see Phap Bao Pagoda, the headquarter of Hoi An’s local buddhist association, and Tran Family Chapel, one of the best preserved ancestral temples.
There are many restaurants and eateries on Phan Chu Trinh walking street where locals sell Hoi An-style chicken rice (com ga). This dish includes steamed yellow rice, shredded chicken, shredded green papaya, sliced onion, herbs, and is served with a small soup of chick organs. To eat, local people will mix everything with soy sauce, Hoi An-style chilli sauce, and other sauces. See full information & details
Nguyen Phuc Chu Street
Running along the Hoai River, to the south, Nguyen Phuc Chu street is 500 meters long. It runs from Cao Hong Lanh St (a parking lot, 3-ways crossroad) to a park at the eastern tip of An Hoi Island.
Nguyen Phuc Chu walking street is named after a Nguyen lord who ruled the southern part of Vietnam from 1691 to 1725. In 1719, this man visited Hoi An trading port, and gave a beautiful name to the Japanese Bridge. It’s ‘Lai Vien Kieu’ which means ‘the bridge that receives guests from afar‘, showing his welcoming spirit to foreign merchants at that time.
Between Nguyen Phuc Chu street and the Hoai River, there are promenades and An Hoi sculpture park where visitors can find many seats to have a break, enjoy the view to the Old Town and boats on the river. Except spots near the bridge, other parts on this side of the river are not really busy. Along the wateredge, it’s easy to find some ticket booths for a lantern boat ride or ‘Hoi An Old Town’ entry fee.
At the end of Nguyen Phuc Chu street, there is Dong Hiep park and the Hoi An Lune Center for Performing Arts. Here, Teh Dar show (aka ‘Vietnamese bamboo circus’) amaze viewers every night. It tells stories about the life and culture of tribal communities in Vietnam’s central highlands. This show is absolutely worth seeing, and its timing is from 6 to 7 pm. See full information & details
In the evening, visitors can see street food stalls on Nguyen Phuc Chu street, and many bars/pubs & restaurants with live music. These places open up to midnight.
Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street
Nguyen Thi Minh Khai street is a 350 meters long road, running from the Hoi An Protestant Church to the Japanese Bridge. It’s completed designated to be a walking street.
Along Nguyen Thi Minh Khai walking street, visitors can see Cam Pho Communal House, Phung Hung Old House, Nguyen Tuong Family Chapel, and the Japanese Bridge.
Nguyen Thi Minh Khai street is named after a Vietnamese famale revolutionary and a leader of the Indochinese Communist Party who lived from 1910 to 1941. She is the wife of Tran Phu whose name is given to the street on the other side of the bridge.
Cong Nu Ngoc Hoa Street
Between Nguyen Thi Minh Khai street and the Hoai River, Cong Nu Ngoc Hoa is a 350-meters-long riverside road. It runs from Cao Hong Lanh St to the Japanese Bridge. This is one of the least crowded walking streets in Hoi An. There are many restaurants, coffee shops, and shops lining its northern side.
Other Walking Streets
In the Hoi An Old Town, here are short, less importants walking streets: Chau Thuong Van St (from Cantonese Assembly Hall to the Hoai River), Hai Ba Trung St (from Phap Bao Pagoda to the Hoai River), Le Loi St (from Tran Family Chapel to the Hoai River), Hoang Van Thu St (from Trung Hoa Assembly Hall to the Hoai River).
