In the Chàm Islands, the “stone crab” (Cua đá) is a celebrated local specialty, distinct for its habit of living in rocky mountain crevices rather than deep water. These crabs migrate to the ocean to release eggs, relying on the island’s lush, preserved forests and clean environment. Prized for their firm, aromatic meat and rich nutritional value, they are a sought-after delicacy for visitors. Due to their slow growth and protected status within the Cham Islands Marine Park, they are harvested sustainably, making every encounter a unique, flavorful taste of the islands’ pristine, protected ecosystem.
Currently, population of the stone crab in Cham Islands is nearly 20,000 individuals. If it decreases sharply, the Vietnam government will prohibit catching it.
Price of Cham Island crab is around 800,000 VND per kilogram but occasionally up to 1,500,000 to 2,000,000 VND per kilogram in some periods. To buy, visitors need to contact local residents.
