History of Hoi An Traditional Art Performance House

Hoi An Traditional Art Performance House was established in 1996. Its first theatre was the ancient house at 39 Nguyen Thai Hoc St.

On 1st June 2018, the Hoi An Traditional Art Performance House was moved to the new address, 66 Bach Dang St. It has served daily shows that are included in the Hoi An Old Town ticket and private shows for special guests and organizations.

From March 2023, artists at Hoi An Traditional Art Performance House perform ‘The Heritage Road’ show in the international terminal of the Da Nang airport. It occurs at the midnight.

At the present, Hoi An Traditional Art Performance House is home to about 40 artists.

Daily Show in Hoi An Traditional Art Performance House

The daily show at the Hoi An Traditional Art Performance House is in the performing room lying on its second floor. The ground floor serves for an exhibition of colorful, fun paper masks that will be used in Hat Boi or Tuong (often referred to ‘Vietnamese opera’) as well as some musical instruments. The masks are painted by artisan Phong Bui (man), one of the last mask painters in Vietnam;

Before going upstairs, visitors need to show the Hoi An Old Town ticket pass, and then the checker will cut one piece of the pass or scan the QR code. He/she will give each visitor one card that is used to play a traditional game later. Before leaving the theatre, please give it back to the same place.

This show is available at 10:15 AM, 3:15 PM, and 4:15 PM everyday. It’s around 30 minutes long, including some performances. Visitors are advised to be in the theatre at least 15 mins before the showtime, to find a seat. Here, it’s air-conditioned, so it becomes a good place to cool down after an exploration around the town.

Here are what visitors can expect in the show:

– the opening performance: traditional musical instruments, including dan tranh (a kind of plucked zither), dan tu (a kind of plucked zither), dan nhi (a bowed string instrument), dan bau (one-string zither), trong (drum) va sao truc (long bamboo flute).

– folk dances showing daily activities of local people or love between boys and girls or traditional dancing of Cham people those culture was influenced by Indians.

– performance of Hat Boi or Tuong that is referred to as the classical Vietnamese opera.

– performance of Bai Choi, a folk bingo game and singing of Vietnamese people in the central coast that was inscribed as a Unesco intangible cultural heritage of humanity (see more information & details)

*After this bingo game, a visitor will receive one lantern as a gift if he or she has the matching card.

Is Show in Hoi An Traditional Art Performance House Worth It?

Compared to the spectacle Hoi An Memories Show or globally-rewarded bamboo circus, the show at Hoi An Traditional Art Performance House is shorter and has fewer wow factors. However, it’ still worth watching. Here are reasons:

– Visitors definitely have the chance to see and learn about authentic Vietnamese art performances as well as Cham dancings. Most artists will wear traditional costumes, play traditional musical instruments, and sing in Vietnamese language. The dance of Cham ladies reminds the audience about the glorious past of the Champa kingdom which existed in the area by the 14th century.

– Visitors will get a gift (maybe one lantern) if win the game in the show. That would be a good reminder about the town and the trip to Vietnam.

– The show may keep kids entertained while sightseeing the Hoi An Old Town.

– It’s a low-cost show (cheapest in Hoi An). Foreign visitors will need to pay 120,000 VND for one ‘Hoi An Ancient Town ticket pass’, including entry to 5 places. And then use it to enter the performance house and watch the show. So, the price for this show is 24,000 VND (approx 1 USD). Just to know, grand shows at Hoi An cost at least 600,000 VND/adult (approx 25 USD).

– It’s the only show at the Hoi An Ancient Town that occurs in the daytime.

– The theater is air-conditioned, so on hot days, visitors can come here to watch interesting performances and cool down.

– Watching this show is a different way to use Hoi An Old Town ticket pass, besides sightseeing temples, houses, museums.

Tips to Visit Hoi An Traditional Art Performance House

– If can’t find a ticket counter to buy ‘Hoi An Old Town’ ticket to watch the show at Hoi An Traditional Art Performance House, visitors can find the direction to the theatre first, and then go to the counter near trishaws along Hoang Van Thu Str.

– Visitors should be in Hoi An Traditional Art Performance House at least 15 mins before showtimes. The performance room is air-conditioned, so on hot days, it’s a good place to have a break. If come early, it’s easier to choose the seats with a good view of the stage. Because the room gets quite small, late comers may have no seat and have to stand for watching or return for seeing the next show.

– Before going upstairs to watch the show, remember to take one card for the traditional game later.

– Visitors must buy a ‘Hoi An old town ticket’ to enter the Hoi An Traditional Art Performance House and watch the show. Its price is 120,000 VND for each & children above 15 years old.

– Those who can’t climb stairs should not wait for the show at Hoi An Traditional Art Performance House (no wheelchair accessible). Instead, bamboo circus show (Teh Dar Show) at Hoi An Lune Center for Performing Arts and Hoi An Memories Show at Hoi An Impression Theme Park, are better choices, although the price is higher.

– Toilets are on both first and second floors of Hoi An Traditional Art Performance House.

– No dress code is required, so wear any outfits you feel comfortable in.

– Cold drinks are allowed to be brought in the performance room of Hoi An Traditional Art Performance House, but not with foods. Near restaurants and stores sell them.
