Do You Have to Pay to Enter Hoi An Old Town?

At the present (2024), tourists need to pay an entrance fee to enter Hoi An Old Town. This regulation was approved by local authorities after it’s inscribed as a Unesco world heritage site in 1999. According to Unesco, the town is an exceptionally well-preserved trading port in Asia. Today, there are about 3,300 buildings surviving, including wooden houses, temples, market, bridge, family chapels, wells, etc. See more information & details

Additionally, tourists just need to buy a ticket when want to enter the world heritage site area. This heritage preservation area is generally bordered by Hoai River (south), Cao Hong Lanh Street (west), Phan Chu Trinh Street (north) and Hoang Dieu Street (east). It spans up to nearly 30 hectares.

It also means that if do not go into the world heritage area, tourists do not have to buy a ticket. However, almost every highlight of Hoi An is found in it, such as the Japanese Bridge, therefore a ticket is still necessary to buy. As a responsible traveller, you should get one ticket anyway, to have support to better preserve the town.

Other world heritage sites in the area, such as My Son Sanctuary and Hue’s Royal Palace, also require an entrance fee to enter.

Hoi An Old Town Entrance Fee & Ticket Price

Hoi An Old Town entrance fee is 120,000 VND (approx 5 USD) for foreign visitors who are older than 15 years old. It’s free for children and kids under 15 years old. Parents should have a passport picture on the phone, to show the year of birth to cashiers at the ticket office when needed. Overseas Vietnamese people who don’t have Vietnam passport, need to pay the same price as foreigners.

Vietnamese tourists will pay 80,000 VND, but less attractions are included (than foreigner’s ticket because of the cheaper price). At ticket offices, cashiers will request to show the Vietnam identification card to let them check hometown and age. Vietnamese seniors who are over 60, or have merits in French and American wars, will have a discount, according to Vietnam’s national law.

Vietnamese who were borned and have lived in Hoi An, won’t need to pay an entrance fee to go into Hoi An Old Town.

Inclusions of Hoi An Old Town Ticket

With a Hoi An Old Town ticket, visitors can enter Hoi An Ancient Town world heritage area anytime during the trip in Hoi An. Its validity is from the day when you buy it to the day when you leave Hoi An. It’s not only one day as shown on the ticket itself. At ticket offices, free visiting maps are free to take (available in Vietnamese, English). Information on the map will be helpful if you are a first timer.

To avoid buying another ticket, visitors need to take a photo of the one you bought and save it on the phone (to show up anytime if requested). If do not have, show your own pictures at a temple, old house, etc to prove that you had a ticket to enter them. It will be helpful! However, we think that cashiers will understand after listening to explanation from visitors.

In addition, ticket holders can visit 5 attractions within the Hoi An Ancient Town world heritage site area (chosen from a fixed list). There are an old bridge, traditional wooden houses, holy temples, communal houses, museums, family chapels, and more. Here is the full list of attractions:

  1. Hoi An Traditional Art Performance House for watching a minishow about local culture (available at 10:15 am, 3.15 pm, 4:15 pm daily)
  2. Japanese Covered Bridge (or Pagoda Bridge)
  3. Cantonese Assembly Hall (or Quang Trieu Assembly Hall)
  4. Fujian Assembly Hall (or Phuc Kien Pagoda)
  5. Hainan Assembly Hall (or Hai Nam Pagoda)
  6. Teochew Assembly Hall (or Trieu Chau Pagoda)
  7. Trung Hoa Assembly Hall (or Duong Thuong Assembly Hall, Five Communities Assembly Hall)
  8. Quan Cong Temple & Quan Am Pagoda
  9. Minh Huong Communal House
  10. Phung Hung Old House
  11. Tan Ky Old House
  12. Quan Thang Old House
  13. Duc An Old House (or Cao Hong Lanh Memorial House)
  14. Museum of Sa Huynh Culture
  15. Museum of Hoi An Trade Ceramics
  16. Museum of Hoi An Folklore
  17. Hoi An Museum of History & Culture
  18. Museum of Hoi An Traditional Medicine
  19. Tran Family Chapel
  20. Nguyen Tuong Family Chapel
  21. Cam Pho Communal House
  22. Black Sesame Soup Demonstration
  23. Japanese Culture Gallery

To read full details and see photos, browse https://hoiandaytrip.com/hoi-an-old-town-ticket-attractions

If interested in more than 5 places within the above list, visitors need to buy one more ticket (pay another 120,000 VND) to have 5 more places.

On the other side, Hoi An Old Town ticket doesn’t include food, drink, personal expenses, tour guide service, any transportation to get around it, boat ride on the river, shows (like Teh Dar Show), lanterns to release,…If want to attend Hoi An Lantern Festival in the full moon monthly, a ticket to enter the town is totally enough. This traditional festival doesn’t require a fee to join.

Update: In 2024, visitors will show the ticket pass to scan QR code at attractions. Additionally, 5 ‘included’ attractions must be Japanese Bridge or/and Quan Cong Temple, one of community-owned or family-owned heritage buildings (such as Chinese assembly halls, ancient houses, temples), one of state-owned places (such as museums). Meaning that with one ticket, visitors just can see 1 assembly hall, 1 old house, and others can be flexible. If want to visit one more assembly hall or old house, visitors will need to buy one more ticket. For that reason, we recommend going to: (1) Japanese Bridge, (2) Cantonese Assembly Hall or Fujian Assembly Hall, (3) Tan Ky Old House or Phung Hung Old House or Duc An Old House, (4) Hoi An Traditional Art Performance House, (5) a museum.

Every tourist needs to buy an entrance ticket to visit the Hoi An Old Town. Although when come to the town, sometimes nobody requests, buying one is a right and responsible action. Here are reasons why:

– Hoi An Old Town (or Hoi An Ancient Town) is a world heritage site inscribed by Unesco in 1999. In Vietnam, tourists need to buy an entrance ticket to visit all world heritage sites.

– Hoi An Old Town entry fee will be majorly used to restore all historical buildings which lie within it. Excellently well-preserved heritages, such as old houses, Japanese Bridge, Chinese assembly halls or temples, are renovated and restored for free. Keep in mind that these heritages face many threats throughout the year, such as fire, flood in rainy season, typhoons.

– Hoi An Old Town entry fee will be used for management, monitoring, and promotion activities, including the salary for those who work in the management board, such as ticket cashiers, artisans, security men,…

– Hoi An Old Town entry fee will be used to give back to local communities, such as improving schools, hospitals, building parks, social welfares, pollution,…
