Does Hoi An Flood Every Year?
Hoi An is not flooded every year, but it’s common during the peak period of the rainy season, especially from October through December when the typhoons make landfall in the area.
During the rainy season, Thu Bon River rises high due to heavy rain and water released from hydroelectric dams in the mountains. Hoi An (specifically Hoi An’s Old Town) lies on the bank of this river, therefore it’s often inundated by water, giving it the nickname ‘Venice or Vietnam’.
The flooding in Hoi An usually lasts 1-3 days. In the Old Town, riverside roads Bach Dang and Cong Nu Ngoc Hoa as well as An Hoi Island, are flooded first. After that, Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street, Phan Boi Chau Street.

Which Areas Will Be Flooded in Hoi An?
In the Old Town of Hoi An, these roads/streets will be flooded: Bach Dang Street, Nguyen Phuc Chu Street, Nguyen Hoang Street, Cong Nu Ngoc Hoa Street, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street, Cao Hong Lanh Street, Dao Duy Tu Street, Thoai Ngoc Hau Street, Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, part of Le Loi Street, part of Hoang Van Thu Street, streets around Hoi An Central Market, Nguyen Duy Hieu Street, Phan Boi Chau Street,… (please see the map below)
Islands on Thu Bon River like An Hoi Island (close to Old Town), Cam Kim Island, Cam Nam Island, and island of Hoi An Memories Land will be flooded. Visiting or staying overnight on these islands are not to do.
Due to bad weather, going to Cham Islands (on the sea) are prohibited, therefore staying here is impossible.
On the other hand, these areas in Hoi An are not flooded: section of city center from Tran Hung Dao Street to the north, Tra Que Vegetable Village, An Bang Beach, Ha My Beach, Tan Thanh Beach,…
To avoid the flooding in Hoi An, visitors shouldn’t book the hotel near the rivers or on islands on Thu Bon River. Staying overnight in nearby Da Nang city is also a good choice (and then have a day trip to Hoi An when the flooding stops or reduces).
If the hotel lies within the flooded area, visitors need to leave when the streets are covered by water. The hotel can assist a boat to carry guests and their luggage to the higher place.

Things to Do in Hoi An When It’s Flooded
While Hoi An has been flooded, visitors can sightsee Tran Phu Street, the most beautiful road in the town, and cultural/historical places along it such as Cantonese Assembly Hall, Ba Mu Temple, Duc An Old House, Kazik Park, Quan Thang Old House, Museum of Sa Huynh Culture, Museum of Trade Ceramics, Museum of Local Products, Trung Hoa Assembly Hall, Fujian Assembly Hall, Quan Cong Temple, Minh Huong Communal House, Hainan Assembly Hall, Teochew Assembly Hall,…
Because of their high location, visitors also still can visit these places: Tran Family Chapel, Phap Bao Pagoda,…
During flooding, visitors can not see these places: Hoi An Night Market, Tan Ky Old House, Hoi An Traditional Art Performance House, Hoi An Central Market, Hoi An Lune Center for Performing Arts, Nguyen Tuong Family Chapel, Phung Hung Old House, Japanese Culture Gallery, Cam Pho Communal House, Red Seal Ship, Museum of Traditional Medicine, Museum of Folklore, Diep Dong Nguyen House,…
Japanese Covered Bridge is the only place in town where visitors can go anytime. Ancient houses, Chinese assembly halls, museums,…are closed during the flooding and also open at least 1/2 day after the flooding gone.
After the flooding, streets are dirty and smelly (so not great to sightsee). Attractions, shops, restaurants,… are not ready yet to open (busy for cleansing and rearrangements). For that reason, please come to Hoi An at least 1 or 2 days after the flooding gone.
‘Lantern boat’ (sampan boat on the river to release lanterns at night in Hoi An) is not available. Likewise, there are no boat trips on Thu Bon River as well.
In other areas of Hoi An:
– My Son Sanctuary is flooded when flooding occurs in Hoi An. It’s located in a narrow valley that is flooded quickly when it rains heavily. Roads from the city to this place are covered by water, making it inaccessible during the flood.
– Beaches in Hoi An are not flooded, but the sea water will be cold and the waves are usually big.
– Depending on the flood level, Cam Thanh Coconut Village (and its popular basket boat tour) may be available or closed. Please have a double check on the date. Cooking schools in this village are closed too.
– Entire Cam Kim Island will be inundated, so all places on this island are impossible to access and sightsee (like Kim Bong Carpentry Village, Tra Nhieu Village, Ban Thach Mat Village,…).
– Thanh Ha Pottery Village and Thanh Ha Terracotta Park is flooded as it’s by the river. Please do not go to this village.
– Tra Que Vegetable Village is not flooded but if it rains a lot, going around or learning about traditional farming culture here is not ideal. However, a cooking class should be considered.
– Rice fields in Hoi An will have no rice to see (rice crop stops before the rainy season already). Fields near Tra Que Village are filled by water, but provide the chance to see local life (fishing, water buffalo, etc)
– It’s impossible to visit Cham Islands because getting there is super dangerous when the weather is stormy.
In Da Nang, visitors can sightsee Marble Mountains, Am Phu Cave, Lady Buddha, Ba Na Hills, Golden Bridge, Cham Sculpture Museum, Dragon Bridge, Han Market, Pink Church, Han River Bridge, Love Bridge,… A trip to some of these attractions is a good idea to spend the day (while Hoi An is still flooded).
Note: Visitors should go to Hoi An Old Town when the flood water is low (because of experience and safety reasons). When the Hoi An Night Market opens, other attractions and activities are all ready. Keep update about its opening status to know the best time to visit the area.
