History & Architecture of Cam Pho Confucius Temple
Cam Pho Confucius Temple is a small temple used to worship Confucius (or Kong Qiu, a great Chinese philosopher lived before Christ, his philosophical teachings called as Confucianism), the Four Sages (4 eminent Chinese philosopher in Confucianism), the Ten Sages (10 most accomplished disciples in Confucianism), 72 disciples of Confucius and local people those passed royal examinations during the feudal periods of Vietnam. Although the city has Confucius Temple of Hoi An, Cam Pho village stills wanted to build its own temple to honor them and encourage the education. Location where it’s located is in Tu Le hamlet.
Generally, Cam Pho Confucius Temple looks to the south and Hung Vuong Road. In the front, there is a small local market (Vien Giac Market or Cam Pho Market). It’s not too far from other important monuments in Cam Pho village: Vien Giac Pagoda (Buddhist temple), Cam Pho Communal House (center for worship of ancestors and deities) and Tu Le Communal House (an own communal house of Tu Le village)
There is no reliable information to determine the exact day/year when Cam Pho Confucius Temple was constructed. In history, it’s restored in 1871 (reign of Tu Duc king), 1913 (reign of Duy Tan king) and 1994.
Cam Pho Confucius Temple has an entrance gate, courtyard and worshipping hall. The entrance gate has four columns, all topped by a lotus, and three entrances. Above the middle entrance, there is a name board with three Chinese words which mean ‘Temple of Confucius (of Cam Pho)’. Two parallel sentences written in Chinese are painted on columns. The worshipping hall itself stands on a higher place than the courtyard, including three departments and two side rooms. One of lacquered boards here was given by Nguyen Tuong Long or Hoang Dao (essayist, novelist) in 1929. He is a member of the family that owns Nguyen Tuong Family Chapel inside the heart of the town.
Every 16th day of the 2nd month and the 8th month (lunar calendar), spring and autumn ceremonies take place to commemorate figures worshipped at Cam Pho Confucius Temple.
