History of Bach Dang Wharf in Hoi An

Bach Dang Wharf or Quay was constructed in 1872 (French colonial time). Along it, there were numerous tube houses with a narrow width that are arranged side-by-side in tight. Their front faces a major road of the town where customers and passengers roam to go shopping, and their back opens to it, for convenient loading and unloading of goods. However, it’s still possible to see many houses directly facing this road. These river-side houses often have 1 or 2 storeys.

During the French colonial period, Bach Dang Wharf was known as the Fujian Quay or Rue de Fukien in French or Duong Phuc Kien in Vietnamese. This road is one of the last roads in the historic Hoi An Old Town. It’s definitely younger than Tran Phu Street (also known as ‘Japanese Bridge Road’ or ‘Rue de Pont Japponais’ in French) and Nguyen Thai Hoc Street (also known as ‘Cantonese Road’ or ‘Rue de Canton‘ in French) in the north.

After 1975, when Vietnam was unified, the road along the Fujian Quay was named ‘Bach Dang’.

From this point, visitors can take a boat trip to the Moonlight Bridge and further Cua Dai Bridge in the downstream of Thu Bon River, or to Kim Bong Carpentry Village and Thanh Ha Pottery Village in the upstream of the river. Every day, there is a ferry boat here, allowing people in Cam Kim Island to reach Hoi An city centre and vice versa. See more information & details

Better to Know about Bach Dang (River)

Bach Dang is a river in northern Vietnam, making the border between Hai Phong city and Quang Ninh province. Its name means ‘white wisteria’. This 43-kilometers-long river is the best waterway to access Hanoi capital from the sea. Therefore, foreign invaders often chose to go inland to Vietnam and then attacked the capital city to rule the country.

In the history of Vietnam, Bach Dang river is associated with 3 battles in which Vietnamese people protected the country from foreign invasion and Vietnam is the winner after all of these battles. For that reason, it symbolizes the indomitable spirit of Vietnamese people in keeping the indepence and peace. In 938, warlord Ngo Quyen defeated the army of the Southern Han Dynasty and then ended the 1,000 years of Chinese rule over Vietnam. Later, he founded the Ngo dynasty in Vietnam. This king was also the first king who requested to build wooden stilts in Bach Dang River and make use of low and high tides in military tactics. In 981, King of Dai Co Viet – Le Dai Hanh defeated the army of Song Dynasty. In 1288, military commander of Dai Viet – Tran Hung Dao defeated the Mongol army and after death, he was honored to be a saint.

To honor the , Bach Dang River is used to name many roads in cities across Vietnam, especially ones running along the river. In Hoi An, Bach Dang Street is by Hoai River and in Da Nang, Bach Dang Street is along the west bank of Han River.
