Can You Do Ba Na Hills Without A Tour?
Visitors can visit Ba Na Hills without a local guide if want to freely explore this park. In general, it won’t be too difficult but an itinerary is needed to make everything organized and to save time. Because Ba Na Hills is on the mountaintop and connected with the foot of the mountain by cable cars. So, the itinerary to visit places around it depends on which cable car visitors will take and its schedule. If want to have an easy visit, everyday there are many guided tours going from Da Nang or Hoi An to choose from.
Transportation to Ba Na Hills in Da Nang Vietnam
Sun World Ba Na Hills (shortly Ba Na Hills) is about 25 km away from Da Nang city centre. Visitors can take a car/taxi/van/bus or ride the motorcycle to get there. The drive by car is 40-60 minutes, depending on weather and traffic. If going by motorbike, it’s a bit longer. The best route is Ba Na – Suoi Mo Road and the park’s entrance is at the end.
From Hoi An, the distance to Ba Na Hills is about 40 km. If going by car, it takes visitors over 1 hour to get there. If riding the motorbike, the best route is the coastal road and then Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Road. See more information & details
From Hue city, the distance to Ba Na Hills is about 100 km, so visitors should go by car/mini van/bus. The drive will be nearly 2 hours without stopping. If want to get there by motorbike, it’s still possible but tired. Hai Van Pass, the most spectacular coastal road in Vietnam should be on the way too. See more information & details
From Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh, if want to visit Ba Na Hills on the same day, visitors have to take an early flight. With a reservation/booking in advance, the driver or the guide will pick up at Da Nang Airport – the nearest airport to Ba Na Hills. After the trip completes, visitors can request to return to the airport or drop off in the hotel in Da Nang/Hoi An. From other countries, such as Philippines, it’s needed to fly to Da Nang Airport first too.
From the car parking lot, visitors need to get a free and short buggy transfer to come to the main entrance (need to do it again when returning). If ride a motorbike, just walk from the bike parking lot. If use a van or bus, it can drop you off right at the main entrance.
Getting to Ba Na Hills’s Cable Car Stations
Riding the cable cars is the only way to come to and explore 90% of Sun World Ba Na Hills that is on the mountaintop (around 1,400m above sea level).
From the main entrance, to get to the cable car stations, visitors need to walk in Cong Thanh – the big gate with “Sun World Ba Na Hills’ sign. Its architecture is inspired by Hue’s imperial city and forbidden purple city. After that, get the escalators to go up and then follow the signs (“way to cable car station”) or instructions of staff. In general, just go along the covered walkway with frescoes about Hoi An. On different times of the day, engineers will operate different cable car routes to go up. So, we outline the itinerary to discover Ba Na Hills based on the departure cable car station.
Ba Na Hills Itinerary From Hoi An Station
The Hoi An Station is the easiest cable car station to reach. Cable cars from here carry passengers directly to the Golden Hands Bridge. The ride is 15-20 mins long.
Firstly, visitors will see Golden Hands Bridge, a world-famous tourist attraction in Ba Na Hills Vietnam. It’s known for a very unique design: a golden footbridge supported by two giant hands that look like stone. From here, the view to below nature reserve and the city is just incredible. Every visitor should have at least one picture in Golden Hands Bridge for sure. See more information & details
To go to the next place, Le Jardin d’Amour (the Garden of Love), visitors need to go downhill from the Golden Bridge (past abandoned French houses, through colorful walkways, past food stalls and a funicular train station). This area has nine gardens, and each one is designed in a different European style. In the centre, there is a statue of a ballerina dancing and lots of fresh, colorful flowers around. A few times a day, outdoor music shows or performances are held. See full information & details
Debay Wine Cellar is in the Le Jardin d’Amour. It’s built in 1923 by the French to preserve their collection of bottles of wine. To walk through it and learn about history, visitors need to buy a ticket. Each ticket (class) compliments a glass of wine at the bar which lies in the end of the cellar and has lots of tables with a view. See full information & details
Continuing going downhill (by the stone-paved path), visitors will see a huge Buddha Statue that rises up to 27 meters. It depicts Sakyamuni Buddha meditating and overlooking the city to bless citizens. The staircase in front of him leads to Linh Ung Ba Na Pagoda. This modest Buddhist temple was completed in 2004, and is the holiest place in the entire Ba Na Hills. Its entrance gate is a great place for photos, known as ‘heaven gate’. See full information & details
To discover the rest of Ba Na Hills, visitors have to walk uphill by the same path, back to Golden Hands Bridge, and get the escalator to Bordeaux Station. The cable car from here is only 5 mins long.
After getting off the cable cars (at Louvre Station), walk straight and use escalators 2 times to go down, to see the Eclipse Plaza. It’s characterized by a huge glass-and-metal tower in the centre, inspired by the famous pyramid in Paris. It looks like a Vietnamese conical hat. On the right and left sides, there are two impressive colonnades with colorful frescoes (may be inspired by Vatican’s square). Behind the glass structure, that is the Lava Castle and at its foot, visitors can find the Lava Road, full of lovely flower gardens. See full information & details
Walking along the path with statues on the right hand, visitors can see the Lunar Castle. Before entering this massive building, do not forget to take a picture at the giant Atlas Statue (a Greek god who holds up the heaven or sky, symbolizing strength and endurance). Inside the castle, there are games with a fee, grand shows (at Moon Square), Moon Junction Theatre or Flying Eyes Theatre to watch fascinating cinematic videos, and the Dragon Den Station (to take a funicular ride to another area in Ba Na Hills, free and about 5-10 mins long).
After leaving the train, use the escalator to go up and then follow the road on the left, visitors will come to the heart of the French Village complex. Highlights here are Saint Denis Church (a magnificent Gothic church with stained glass paintings), Helios Waterfall (a grand cascade with glorious bronze statues of Greek gods and goddesses), Ba Na Brewery (to learn about production of craft beers by German techniques and try them), carousels, outdoor feasts, café, restaurants, shops, games with a prize.
To access the Fantasy Park (amusement park), it’s needed to go downstairs from the square in front of the church. It has 3 levels and over 90 free types of entertainment for visitors, such as free fall from top of drop tower, bumper cars, carousels, mountain climbing, shooting games, dancings, etc. Ba Na Hills Wax Museum which has a collection of nearly 100 wax statues portraying famous people in the world, is on its Level B1 (highest level). To visit it, have to pay another entrance fee. On the same level, Jurassic Park is good for sightseeing if traveling with kids.
To be in King Peak, the highest point in Ba Na Hills (1,487 meters above sea level), walk along the path to the left of the church (uphill) and then climb stairs. From here, it’s possible to see/photograph all of the whole tourist village below when it’s not cloudy (the best spot is in the wooden pavilion). There are also two temples, including one to worship Mountain’s goddess and one for Lord Buddha. See full information & details
To go down the mountain (to finish the visit) from the French Village area, visitors need to go to L’Indochine Station or Taiga Station. The cable car from these stations carry the passenger directly down the plain (above a beautiful waterfall in nearly end). If both of them are closed, it’s neeed to go to Louvre Station. From here, the cable car carries the passenger to Golden Hands Bridge and from this bridge, let’s take another cable car to go down through.
When finishing the cable car ride, visitors have to walk back to the main entrance (again under the covered walkway) and use the transfer by buggy car/bus to go down the car parking lot. If riding the motorbike, just walk to the bike parking lot that is not far away. Bus and van can pick up at the parking lots just in front of Ba Na Hills’s main entrance.
