Are There Monkeys in Ba Na Hills Da Nang Vietnam?

Wild monkeys, primarily long-tailed macaques, occasionally inhabit the forested outskirts and lower cable car stations of Ba Na Hills, attracted by food left by visitors. Feeding or touching these animals is strongly discouraged due to the risk of aggressive bites, scratches, and the transmission of diseases. Visitors should secure food items and maintain a safe distance if they encounter wildlife on the mountain paths.

Does Ba Na Hills Da Nang Have Monkeys?

Yes, you can see monkeys in Ba Na Hills, but not within touristy areas of Sun World Ba Na Hills.

Wild monkeys (such as long-tailed macaques) do occasionally inhabit the forested outskirts and lower areas/cable car stations around Sun World Ba Na Hills because the resort is built within the Ba Na-Nui Chua Nature Reserve.

However, unlike a zoo or sanctuary, they are wild animals. You are unlikely to see them inside the main tourist village/theme park area, though they may occasionally be spotted near the mountain’s lower reaches or forested paths where they are sometimes attracted by food.

Sun World Ba Na Hills lies in the middle of the Ba Na – Nui Chua Nature Reserve. This reserve doesn’t open yet for visitors, so any animal watching activity is still not allowed.

Occasionally, visitors can see red shanked douc langurs in Ba Na Hills from Golden Bridge, cable cars, Linh Ung Pagoda,… Often called the “Queen of Primates,” this primate species is considered one of the most colorful and striking monkeys in the world due to its vibrant coat of red, white, black, grey, and yellow. Native to the tropical forests of Indochina, including Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, these arboreal animals spend almost their entire lives high up in the forest canopy. They live in cohesive social family groups and feed primarily on tender leaves, shoots, flowers, and fruit. Due to severe threats from habitat loss, deforestation, and poaching, the species is listed as critically endangered. Nearby Da Nang’s Son Tra Peninsula protects one of the largest remaining wild populations of these magnificent creatures anywhere on Earth.

The first group ever of red shanked douc was observed by the rangers in 2016 in Ba Na Hills forests. It has 6 indiviuals. In 2025, there are more groups found.

The best time of day to watch red-shanked douc langurs is early in the morning from 6:00 AM to 8:30 AM, when they are most active and foraging for food. So, if want to spot these monkeys, take the first cable car of the day to Golden Hands Bridge (usually from Hoi An Station). After that, observe carefully their activities in nearby forests. When it rains or becomes misty, you won’t have the chance to see them anyways. So, going in a clear, sunny day is needed.

In Da Nang, we suggest going to Son Tra Peninsula (aka the Monkey Mountain) if like spotting long-tailed macaque monkeys (very easy to find in main tourist places) or/and red shanked douc langurs (depending on the luck).
