History of Xom Cam Well on Cham Island
Nobody knows when Xom Cam Well was dug. However, for historians, it’s definitely built by Cham people while they lived on the island before the 14th century (the island is named after this ethnicity). In the 15th century, first groups of Vietnamese people moved to Cham Island. After that, this 4,5-meters-deep well was renovated and reused. Nowadays, it still produces the fresh water for drinking, cooking,… As a public well, it’s located at the meeting point of many roads in the village.
In Vietnamese, Xom Cam means ‘forbidden hamlet’.
From the 15th to the 19th centuries, Xom Cam Well was a place where merchants came to take fresh water. They traveled by boat cross the sea from China, Japan and Europe to visit Hoi An, an international trading port at that time. According to regulations of Vietnam leaders, they must stop on Cham Island before going towards the mainland.
In 2007, Xom Cam Well and 6 other places on Cham Island (Hai Tang Pagoda, Bai Ong Archaeological Site, Bai Lang Archaeological Site, the Ancestral Temple, the Whale Temple, Temple for Ancestors of Swallow Nest Gatherers), were recognized as a national heritage site of Vietnam.
Local people believe that Xom Cam Well always produces fresh water because a god has been blessed them. That’s why they burn incense sticks and bring offspring to this well, to thank him. In daily life, they also believe that if someone drinks the herbal tea made by forest plants and water of the well, he or she won’t feel seasick anymore. For that reason, the tea and packs of dried forest plants are sold around the island.
