What to Expect in Tuy Loan Rice Paper Village?

Tuy Loan Rice Paper Village is located on the bank of Tuy Loan River (in the basin of the Han River), which originates from Ba Na Hills and flows into Cam Le River. In Vietnamese, Tuy means ‘drunk’ and Loan is name of a mythical bird. Name of the village is linked with a folk story in which this bird gets drunk and then stay here.

In the middle of Tuy Loan Rice Paper Village, it’s Tuy Loan Communal House with an age of 500 years (built around 1470). In 1999, it’s honored to be Vietnam’s national heritage site due to its significant role in the history of the area and sophisticated wooden carvings and ceramic decorations. On the 9th and the 10th days of the first lunar month annually, a festival takes place here, attracting some thousands of visitors. It aims to commemorate the ancestors and village’s founders. This communal house is a main sight in tours.

Of course, Tuy Loan Rice Paper Village is well known for its tradition of rice paper making. In 2024, it’s honored to be Vietnam’s national intangible cultural heritage as same as craft of making fish sauce in Nam O Village or stone carving in Non Nuoc Village (Marble Mountains). It was started from the 15th century when Vietnamese people from northern Vietnam moved to the place. Nowadays, there are about 20 families keeping this traditional handicraft. If come, visitors will have the chance to see full process how local people make a rice paper: grinding rice, make and steam rice paper sheets, placing them on bamboo racks, or/and grill on hot charcoal. In Da Nang, ‘Tuy Loan rice paper’ is a specialty and a must have ingredient for many specialty dishes like pork rolls, pancake, grilled pork skewers,… Grilled rice paper (banh trang nuong) and fresh noodles (cut from rice papers) are often served in signature noodle of the city ‘Mi Quang‘.
