How to Visit Son Tra Banyan Tree in Da Nang
The Son Tra Banyan Tree (scientific name: Ficus bengalensis) is in Son Tra Peninsula (Monkey Mountain), Tho Quang ward, Son Tra district, Da Nang city, Vietnam. It’s also known as the Thousand Years Banyan Tree. This tree is about 800 years old, rises up to 22 meters from the mountain slope and has 26 roots. In the middle of a nature reserve with untouched forests, it’s the place where families of red shanked douc langurs (aka Son Tra langur), one of world’s most endangered primates, gather. Therefore, visitors not only have the chance to see a gem of nature, but also watch and photograph the ‘Queen of monkeys’. During the French and American wars, groups of Vietnamese communists and revolutionists meet up at Son Tra Banyan Tree.
In 2014, Son Tra Banyan Tree was honored to be Vietnam’s national heritage tree. This is the first tree rewarded by the title in Da Nang city.
The hiking trail to Son Tra Banyan Tree is about 4 kilometers long (can go by motorbike). Visitors will see beautiful views to the sea, beaches and forests en route. Compared to the hike to Ban Co Peak (one of summits of Son Tra/Monkey Mountain), this trail is less challenging.
