History of Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street in Hoi An
Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street is believed to be the former Japanese quarter when Hoi An served as an international trading port, between 15th and 19th centuries. Historians discovered remains related to daily life and work of Japanese people in archaeological sites at different places in this area. The best preserved house here, Phung Hung Old House, has an architecture with Japanese influences and sure, it’s different from other houses in the same town. The Japanese Covered Bridge is the best remains because it’s named after the Japanese who constructed it. For that reason, in the west end of Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street, there is a Japanese style gate to welcome the visitors and a cultural gallery exhibiting Japanese highlights is established.
In the past, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street looked like present-day Bach Dang Street which has houses in the north and the river/quay in the south. Due to the extension of Hoai River bank, the new riverside street (now Cong Nu Ngoc Hoa Street) was constructed. Houses on this road are connected with the wharf/river with small alleyways.
During the French colonial period, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street was named ‘Khai Dinh Road’. Khai Dinh was the 12nd king of Nguyen dynasty who ruled Vietnam from 1916 to 1925.
