Better to Know about Loc Yen Ancient Village
Loc Yen Ancient Village is the first rural village in Da Nang that was honored to be Vietnam’s national heritage (in September 2019). It’s established in the 15th century by some Vietnamese clans. Until today, this place has no damages from the wars or affects from tourist activities. Local families still have kept their own lifestyle, customs and traditions.
In Loc Yen Ancient Village, visitors will find a collection of 8 traditional wooden houses (called nha ruong) that are typical to midlands of central Vietnam. These one-story houses are between 80 and 150 years ago, and protected by stone walls (one of special features of the whole village). All of them are located in the foot of small hills, with green rice fields in the front and surrounded by forests and fruit gardens. In their gardens, there are different fruit trees grown, including langsat or lon bon in local language (the season in August and September annually), baccarea or dau da (the season in late July and early August), banana, jackfruit, pineapple, lemon,… Coconut palms and areca palms (the thin and tall palm tree) are also popularly cultivated in the area. Along main roads, local residents show ripe fruits at their house entrance to let visitors know.
There are some specialty foods at Loc Yen Ancient Village which visitors should try, such as jackfruit salad, mountain snail cooked with lemongrass, lemon leaf and other spices, crispy rice pancake, grilled hill chicken,… It’s possible to see a couple of restaurants serving these dishes near old houses and fruit gardens.
Visitors can see a map showing famous places to visit and roads to get there at the communal house of Loc Yen Ancient Village. From here, can walk or cycle to some old houses. English is not popular, so if possible, should book a guide. He or she will explain local life, local plants, or translate stories from local residents.

How to Get to Loc Yen Ancient Village
Loc Yen Ancient Village is located in Tien Canh commune, Tien Phuoc district, Quang Nam province (now Da Nang city). It’s about 30 kilometers west of Tam Ky city center, and nearly 75 kilometers south of Hoi An.
From Tam Ky city, visitors can choose to take a private car/bus or ride the motorbike to reach Loc Yen Ancient Village. If going by car/bus, the drive will be nearly 1 hour. If like riding the bike to the village, the best route is DT 616 (the provincial road to Tien Ky town). From the city, just go along it (towards the west or mountains), and at the crossroad near Tien Phuoc martyr cemetery (Google maps: 15°28’51.4″N 108°19’01.4″E), turn left. After that, go straight, cross the river, and at the first crossroad, turn left and go along that road until see Loc Yen Ancient Village (to the left of the river on the map).
From Da Nang/Hoi An, the best way to go to Loc Yen Ancient Village is by car/bus because of long distance. The drive is around 1,5 hours if do not stop anywhere on the way. Normally, local people will go to Tam Ky city first and then follow the DT 616 to reach Loc Yen Ancient Village (see directions above).
