History & Architecture of Ironwood Bridge in Hue

Construction of the Ironwood Bridge at Hue started in 2018. It’s sponsored by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KICA). Total cost was up to 64 billion Vietnam dong. This building is part of the project which aims to connect walking paths on banks of the Perfume River in the city.

On 15th January 2019, the Ironwood Bridge (Cau Go Lim) was inaugurated and opened to the public, becoming the first large footbridge in the city.

The Ironwood Bridge at Hue is a pedestrian bridge, constructed by cement and then paved by 16,000 panels of high-quality ironwood imported from South Africa. It’s 600 meters long and 4 meters wide, linking Nguyen Dinh Chieu Walking Street and nearby attractions with Ly Tu Trong Park on the other side of Phu Xuan Bridge across the Perfume River. These materials make the bridge durable in harsh weather conditions in the area. If the flooding lasts many days, its deck doesn’t need maintenance. The handrails are made of 4,100 pieces of bronze imported from South Korea and painted golden.

Every day, the Ironwood Bridge is one of the best places in Hue city to watch the sunset. From here, visitors will see an amazing scenery when the sky becomes orange and red and the river water becomes shrimmering with golden lights, plus a sense of peacefulness and serenity. That’s why this bridge is often busy throughout the dry season (February to September).

In the evening, the Ironwood Bridge is lit up by colorful lamps. It’s one of the best spots to see and photograph Truong Tien Bridge, the oldest and the most famous bridge in the city which also has a color-changing light system. On nearby Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street, especially during weekends, visitors will meet artists who sing, dance or play musical instruments. Furthemore, there are some locals selling food, beverages and souvenirs too. The atmosphere is lively. No doubt, the surrounding area of the Ironwood Bridge is good to visit at night in Hue Vietnam.

By the way, there is a fact that visitors will find 2 other ironwood bridges in Hue city. Both of them are on Minh Mang Street, on the way from the city to royal tombs. Because they were made by ironwood in the past, so by that, simply called ‘Ironwood Bridge’. The Ironwood Bridge on the bank of the Perfume River is the 3rd one in history.
