Better to Know about Hon Nhon Island as a Tourist

Hon Nhon Island is a small rocky island just 250 meters from the beach of Bai Lang Village, the main fishing village on Cham Island. Its name stems from the local Central Vietnamese dialect and geography. First, “nhờn” refers to “shrugging off” or deflecting. Sitting at the bay’s entrance, this resilient rock acts as a natural breakwater, absorbing the brunt of violent monsoon waves and letting them slip away, keeping the inner harbor safe for boats. Second, the name reflects the area’s rich marine life; the dense coral reefs and algae blankets create a slick, slippery (nhờn) underwater texture. Today, these calm, protected waters make it the island’s premier snorkeling spot.

Due to diverse marine life around Hon Nhon Island, this island becomes a popular spot for snorkeling, especially for those who visit Cham Islands without tour. From the beach in the end of Bai Lang Village, visitors can find a boat from local fishermen (like small basket-like bamboo boat) to reach it. If like, swimming there is also absolutely possible.

Hon Nhon Island is also a spot in Cham Islands underwater walking tour.

How to Get to Hon Nhon Island (Cham Islands)

Xep Beach (Bai Xep) is on the largest island of the Cham Islands, and close to the main fishing village (Bai Lang) on this island. To reach this island from the mainland Da Nang or Hoi An, visitors need to take a speed boat or ferry from Cua Dai Port. Read our guide How to Get to Cham Island for more information.

After reaching Cham Island (Hon Lao), visitors can swim or take boat to Hon Nhon Island from Bai Lang Beach. There are fishing boats on the nearby water, it’s needed to observe carefully if want to swim there. About the boat ride, the best way is getting on a small, round basket boat. People in the homestay can help.

From Bai Huong, visitors need to go to Bai Xep Beach first (3km from the village) and then swim to Hon Nhon Island. The best way is riding the motorbike or hiring a local rider for a pilion ride (just tell people in the homestay and remember to save their phone number to contact when need the return ride). Between Bai Huong and Bai Xep, don’t miss Hon Chong Beach.
