Why Are There So Many Lanterns in Hoi An?

No doubt that visitors will see lanterns everywhere around the historical part of Hoi An – Hoi An Old Town. This special feature gives this town the nickname ‘lantern town’ or ‘city of lanterns’. Here are reasons why the lanterns are so many in Hoi An:

– Local people hang lanterns to decorate their houses/restaurants/shops

– Chinese people who brought lanterns to Hoi An, traditionally hang up red lanterns to bring fortune to their family

– One of the ways local people celebrate the full moon, the holiest day of the lunar month, is by hanging lanterns. This is the origin of well-known Lantern festival in Hoi An

– Hanging lanterns is encouraged by local authorities to make Hoi An prettier, and by that, more tourists will come to visit

– Lantern is one of symbols of Hoi An

List of Lantern Streets in Hoi An Vietnam

Tran Phu Street

Stretching from the Japanese Covered Bridge to the Hoi An Central Market, this is the oldest street in Hoi An. For that reason, it’s lined by houses arranged side-by-side in tight and the most important religious buildings from all communities in the town (such as assembly halls, temples, pagodas, etc). During the day, visitors will see plenty of lanterns hung up in buildings here and above the head. After sunset, lanterns are lit up by lamps, becoming very colorful and attractive. The best time to visit is the full moon night when the Lantern festival occurs. See more information & details

Nguyen Thai Hoc Street

Parallel to Tran Phu Street in the north and Bach Dang Wharf or Hoai River in the south, Nguyen Thai Hoc Street is the second oldest road in Hoi An Old Town. This street is one of the prettiest roads in town because it’s lined by traditional houses and western-influenced houses as well as colorful lanterns and flowers. The best preserved house is Tan Ky House, where local families sold spices and silk in the past. During the day, visitors will see plenty of lanterns hung up in buildings here and above the head. After sunset, lanterns are lit up by lamps, becoming very colorful and attractive. The best time to visit is the full moon night when the Lantern festival occurs. See more information & details

Bach Dang Street

Bach Dang Street is the riverside road (or wharf, quay) of Hoi An. Meaning that it has one side with houses (north) and the river is on the other side (south), with lots of boats docking. In the daytime, visitors will see lanterns hung up in buildings here and above the head. However, the best time to enjoy the beauty of lanterns is in the evening when they are lit and become colorful. Additionally, thanks to stretching along the river, it’s possible to see a large amount of paper lanterns floating on the water, providing a spectacular night scene. Sure, the view is even better when the Lantern festival takes place, on every full moon night. See more information & details

Nguyen Phuc Chu Street

This street is 500 meters long, stretching the park on the south bank of the Hoai River. It’s not an old street and not really busy in the daytime, but in the evening, it becomes crowded because of tourists flocking and colorful because of so many lanterns hung up above the head. On one side of the road, there are restaurants, bars, pubs, café, and shophouses. Sure, they are decorated by numerous lanterns. We recommend walking to the wateredge of the river and enjoy the splendid beauty of thousands of lanterns (including candle lanterns floating on the water).

Phan Chu Trinh Street

Phan Chu Trinh Street is one of major roads in Hoi An Old Town. It’s nearly 1,000 meters long, making it the longest in the town. During the day, visitors will see old yellow-wall houses, heritage buildings as well as a plenty of lanterns hung up in buildings here and above the head. After sunset, lanterns are lit up by lamps, becoming very colorful and attractive. The best time to visit is the full moon night when the Lantern festival occurs. See more information & details

Chau Thuong Van Street

This is a short road, starting from Cantonese Assembly Hall and ending at Nguyen Phuc Chu Street on the other side of the river. An Hoi Bridge lies on it. Here, visitors will have the chance to see as many lanterns as they can in the evening, including lanterns on the street, at houses and on the river. For that reason, no visitors doesn’t stop on the bridge to take pictures/videos. It’s known as ‘Bridge of lights’ or ‘Lantern bridge’ by travelers.
