History of Y Pha Nho Cemetery
Y Pha Nho Cemetery at Son Tra Peninsula is associated with the first ever war between French-Spanish and Vietnamese people from 1858 to 1860. This event also marked a turning point in Vietnam’s history and the beginning of French conquest of Vietnam. It’s also known as the Ossuaire Hill.
Nowadays, visitors will see 32 tombs of French and Spanish army officers, including 18 big tombs and 14 small tombs. In the centre, there is one small chapel where ceremonies and anniversaries occur. Vietnamese soldiers from nearby military bases and tourists often come here to commemorate. Below it, the ossuaire of about 1,000 soldiers who died in battles in 1858, 1859 and 1860 was buried altogether. In the past, the entrance to this mass grave was covered by local people. Thus, Y Pha Nho Cemetary is a special historical site.
100 meters away from present-day Y Pha Nho Cemetery, there are other tombs but they were moved to a cemetery in Hoa Vang district to widen the road leading to the cruise port.

Tips to Visit Y Pha Nho Cemetery
– During the rainy season, from October to January, visitors should bring the umbrella or rain poncho/rain jacket, waterproof shoes or good sandals, and mosquito repellent.
– Hat/cap/umbrella, sunglasses and sunscreen if visit in the dry season (from January to end of August).
– No dress code regulation is required, so visitors just need to wear any styles. However, if plan to see the nearby Lady Buddha or Linh Ung Pagoda, please wear long clothes to show respect to the god.

How to Get to Y Pha Nho Cemetery
Y Pha Nho Cemetery is located on Yet Kieu Road, Tho Quang ward, Son Tra district, Da Nang city, Vietnam. It’s near the Da Nang Cruise Port (Tien Sa Port).
From Da Nang city, visitors can take a car/taxi/bus or ride the motorbike to Y Pha Nho Cemetery. If ride the motorbike, just find the quickest direction to the crossroad of Ngo Quyen Street – Le Duc Tho Street and then enter Ngo Quyen Street, follow it until the end. The cemetery lies on the right hand side.
From Hoi An, the distance to Y Pha Nho Cemetery is around 40 kilometers. The most popular ways to get there are by car or motorbike. The drive by car is about 1 hour and it’s a little bit longer if ride the motorbike on your own. The best motorbike route is the coastal road, named Lac Long Quan Street in Hoi An and then Truong Sa Street/Vo Nguyen Giap Street/Hoang Sa Street in Da Nang. Visitors just need to follow it until the crossroad of Le Duc Tho Street. Here, turn left, go straight ahead until seeing the crossroad of Ngo Quyen Street/Yet Kieu Street. Turn right to enter Yet Kieu Street and then follow it until the end. The cemetery lies on the right hand side.
