History of Son Tra Radar Station
Situated at an elevation of 621m, on the west side of Son Tra Mountain/Peninsula, Son Tra Radar Station was constructed by USA in 1965 (during the Vietnam War). It’s a part of the Monkey Mountain Facility, an important military base in the South Vietnam throughout the war. Today, this radar station is still in use (managed by the Vietnam People’s Army), and is widely known as ‘the Eye of Indochina’ because it helps to observe all of the Indochinese Peninsula, Hainan Island and further. After the unification of Vietnam in 1975, it has one more radome (two in total now). In 2015, there was another radar station built near the first Son Tra Radar Station (between it and Ban Co Peak).
Because of security reason, Son Tra Radar Station is not opened yet to visitors. Within a short walking distance, visitors can find a viewpoint (or observation deck).

How to Get to Son Tra Radar Station
Son Tra Radar Station is located on the west side of Son Tra Mountain/Peninsula, and on the road from the foot of this mountain to Ban Co Peak.
From the city, visitors can take a private car/taxi/bus or ride the motorbike or hike from the base of the mountain to see Son Tra Radar Station. The distance from Da Nang city center to this place is around 16km, and it’s around 40km if go from Hoi An.
Many visitors choose to ride the motorbike up to the top of Son Tra Mountain (and of course, will go pass by Son Tra Radar Station) because of lower cost than hiring a private car/bus. Today, automatic bikes are not allowed to drive up to the peak through (need to stop at the security booth and then hike for 3,5km).
If like to hike, it’s needed to find the starting point of the trail (car road) on Yet Kieu Street first (the road leading to Tien Sa Port). Its location on Google maps: 16°06’50.4″N 108°14’34.3″E. From here, walking up to the mountain for around 6 kilometers, and Son Tra Radar Station will be on right side. See more information & details
