Better to Know about Son Tra Airport
The Son Tra Airport is a historical remain of the Monkey Mountain Facility, a USA military base in the South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. It’s constructed in 1965, at the same time with Son Tra Radar Station, and now, under the abandonment. Here, about 16 helicopters could land all together. Until the reunification of Vietnam in 1975, the US army conveyed goods, weapons, solders,… from the plain to this place, and from this airport, deceased American soldiers were transported after being processed, and then taken to the U.S. 7th Fleet outside the South China Sea for repatriation to the United States.
Today, the Son Tra Airport is a historical attraction in the top area of Son Tra Peninsula, opening to all visitors. It lies between the second radar station and the peaks.

How to Get to Son Tra Airport, Monkey Mountain Da Nang
Son Tra Airport is located at the top of Son Tra Mountain/Peninsula, and on the road from the foot of this mountain to Ban Co Peak.
From the city, visitors can take a private car/taxi/bus or ride the motorbike or hike from the base of the mountain to see Son Tra Airport. The distance from Da Nang city center to this place is around 16km, and it’s around 40km if go from Hoi An.
Many visitors choose to ride the motorbike up to the top of Son Tra Mountain (and of course, will go pass by Son Tra Airport) because of lower cost than hiring a private car/bus. Today, automatic bikes are not allowed to drive up to the peak through (need to stop at the security booth and then hike for 5km).
If like to hike, it’s needed to find the starting point of the trail (car road) on Yet Kieu Street first (the road leading to Tien Sa Port). Its location on Google maps: 16°06’50.4″N 108°14’34.3″E. From here, walking up to the mountain for around 6 kilometers, and Son Tra Airport will be on right side. See more information & details
