History & Exhibitions in Non Nuoc – Ngu Hanh Son Stone Carving Memory Museum
Non Nuoc – Ngu Hanh Son Stone Carving Memory Museum was opened on 24th April 2023 and became the 3rd private museum in Da Nang. It’s founded by Le Van Hoa (aged 45), a talented local artisan who grew up in Non Nuoc Stone Carving Village. Tradition of stone carving here was honored as Vietnam’s national intangible cultural heritage in 2014. See more information & details
The museum has two floors with a total area of up to 700 m2. Its design is inspired by traditional art of Cham people who lived in the area before the 14th century and had influences from Indian culture. Visitors can realize that it has a similarity with the Museum of Cham Sculpture in Da Nang city downtown.
The first exhibition of Non Nuoc Museum is about blacksmithing. In the past, many people needed to learn about this work and practice for about 4 months to make the tools to carve the stone. In the next exhibition, it’s possible to see how locals used a handsaw to cut the stone from the mountains and sure, it took a long time to be done. For that reason, in the early stage of the stone carving tradition, they made only small objects (such as accessories or household items). In the rest of the museum, there are fine art sculptures carved from stone in the Marble Mountains and somewhere else in Vietnam. This collection includes memorial steles which has a richness of information about the land and people in past centuries, the Buddha statue which the founder made when he was still a teenager and sculptures about Hindu gods/goddesses.
Outside Non Nuoc Museum, visitors will see plenty of stone sculptures that vary in size, shape, color and meaning. The total area is up to 2,000 m2.
