Museum of Sa Huynh – Champa Culture on Map
History & Architecture of Museum of Sa Huynh – Champa Culture
The Museum of Sa Huynh – Champa Culture was constructed from 2003 to 2009. It opened in December 2009, aiming to honor and introduce two cultures that existed in the area in the past: Sa Huynh and Champa. Sa Huynh culture is older than Champa’s culture.
Architecture of the Museum of Sa Huynh – Champa Culture looks like a Kalan, the way Cham people call the worshipping building of their temple. One temple often has many constructions and it will be the tallest and the largest one. Inside Kalan, holy objects Linga and Yoni or the statue of Cham king are worshipped. Although all Kalan look to the east where the sun rises, this museum faces north where the main road is. In the back of the museum, there is a small hill.
This museum is on the way from Hoi An to My Son Sanctuary (a Unesco world heritage site), so will be a good place to stop and learn about the history. During the year, thousands of students from different grades and schools in the area come here to see ancient relics and listen to explanations.
Exhibitions of Museum of Sa Huynh – Champa Culture
Sa Huynh Culture Exhibition
Sa Huynh culture flourished in the central Vietnam region from 1000 BC to 200 AD. Traces of this culture were firstly discovered in 1909 at Sa Huynh, Quang Ngai province by French archaeologists from the French School of the Far East. Sa Huynh means ‘yellow sand’, reflecting the feature of the location where it’s founded. During more than 100 years of research, Duy Xuyen district where the museum is located, has one of the largest number of Sa Huynh culture sites in the country. The district lies along the south bank of the Thu Bon River, from east to west. It has mountainous, midland and coastal habitats.
Exhibition of Sa Huynh Culture at the Museum of Sa Huynh – Champa Culture has about 150 artifacts including large burial jars, pottery, accessories and artefacts (axes, swords, spearheads, knives and sickles). Their age is from 2,000 to 2,500 years old. They are discovered in dozens of sites across Duy Xuyen district by both French and Vietnamese archaeologists. The most impressive artifacts in this collection are burial jars. The largest jar is up to 1,8 meters tall and has a diameter of 70 centimeters, well fitted to an adult. It would be used to preserve the body of dead people or the ash, together with accessories and other valuable items to bring to the next world.

Champa Culture Exhibition
The Champa kingdom existed in central Vietnam from the 2nd to 19th centuries. Emperors of this independent state were ones who requested to build My Son Sanctuary, the holiest and the largest complex of Hindu temples in present-day Vietnam. In Duy Xuyen district, the land lying on the south bank of the Thu Bon River, stretching from My Son to Hoi An, has numerous Cham towers and ruins. More specially, the first capital of Champa kingdom Tra Kieu or Simhapura Citadel was here. It lived between the 4th and 8th centuries before the king constructed a new capital in the south.
The exhibition of Champa Kingdom’s Culture at the Museum of Sa Huynh – Champa Culture has more than 150 artifacts. There are bricks to build Hindu temples, stone sculptures depicting Hindu gods, goddesses and other mythical figures, items which Cham people used in daily life in the past, weapons,…that dated back from 1st to 8th centuries. These objects are discovered and collected around Tra Kieu area where the museum is located and other Cham sites across Duy Xuyen district. So it means that their original location is actually not far from the museum.
