What to Expect in Lang Co Bay Vietnam?
Lang Co Bay is a bay in Lang Co town at the southernmost part of Hue city, central Vietnam. It’s surrounded by Hai Van Pass and Son Cha Island (south), Bach Ma National Park’s Range (west), and Chan May Mountains (north). This bay is famous for 6-mile white sandy Lang Co Beach, striking landscape at Lap An Lagoon, and local traditional oyster and pearl farming. The beach is considered as one of the finest beaches in Vietnam but less popular in tourist itinerary like My Khe Beach in Da Nang or An Bang Beach in Hoi An.
Besides sightseeing and swimming, visitors can go surfing or taking a boat tour with snorkeling at nearby islands (available in the dry season) at Lang Co Bay. This place (and general town) offers very fresh seafood with a less expensive price than other beach destinations in central Vietnam. To try seafood, please go to beachside restaurants or floating restaurants along Nguyen Van Road (shore of Lap An Lagoon).
To catch the view of Lang Co Bay, visitors need to go to Hai Van Pass. The most widely-known spot is the summit of the pass (Hai Van Gate). However, local photographers often come to the spot near the railway (location on Google maps: 16°13’25.9″N 108°05’35.1″E) or the observation tower (location on Google maps: 16°13’36.3″N 108°05’37.2″E) for the most iconic picture.
Lang Co Bay was officially recognized and admitted as the 30th member of the World’s Most Beautiful Bays Club” (often referred to simply as the Worldbays Club) on June 6, 2009. It was the third bay in Vietnam to receive this prestigious recognition, following Ha Long Bay (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and Nha Trang Bay.
Today, Lang Co Bay is home to some famed luxury hotels like Banyan Tree or Angsana.
According to local stories, the name of Lăng Cô Bay (or Lăng Cô Town) originates from Làng Cò which means ‘stork village’ in Vietnamese. When French colonized the country, they wrote name of the area without punctuation on the map, and over time, Làng Cò is used wrongly and evolve into Lăng Cô. Some researchers believe that Lăng Cô is understood to be ‘tomb of Co (female whale)’. Whale worship is one of the most distinctive and deeply rooted spiritual traditions of the fishing communities all along the coast of Central and Southern Vietnam. It is recognized as an important part of the nation’s cultural heritage.

How to Get to Lang Co Bay Vietnam
Lang Co Bay is located in Lang Co town, Phu Loc district, Hue city (now Chan May – Lang Co commune, Hue city). The most popular ways to get to it are hiring a car/bus and riding the motorbike (a roundtrip or on the way to the next city).
From Da Nang city center, the distance to Lang Co Bay is around 32km via the Hai Van Tunnel and 40km via the Hai Van Pass. First time visitors often choose to drive through the pass before visiting the bay, while local visitors like going through the tunnels to save time. From Hoi An, the distance is 60-70km.
From Hue city center, the distance is approximately 65km. It takes visitors around 1,5hrs to get there if go by car and longer if go by bike.
On the tours from Hue to Hoi An/Da Nang and vice versa, either motorbike tour or car tour, Lap An Lagoon in the Lang Co Bay area is a popular stop to sightsee and take photo.
