What to Expect in Kon Klor Communal House?
On the north bank of Dak Bla River, Kon Klor Communal House is the communal house of three villages: Kon Klor, Kon Rbàng and Kon Tum Pơng. Current building was reconstructed in 2000, after a fire. It’s the largest nha rong (communal house) in the Central Highlands of Vietnam (which spans 54,500 km2). Its owners are Bahnar people who traditionally settle in the area. Their population is nearly 54,000 people in Kon Tum province, and 286,900 people in Vietnam.
Kon Klor Communal House is 21 meters tall and 16 meters wide. It’s built by timber, bamboo and thatch. This A-shaped construction serves as the gathering place of all inhabitants in the village during important meetings, ceremonies or festivals.
In Bahnar language, Kon Klor means ‘village of cotton trees’ because there are many cotton trees living in the area (scientific name: Ceiba pentandra).
