The boat race in Hoi An takes places on the 12nd day of the first lunar month, within Vietnamese Lunar New Year (Tet holiday), the biggest traditional festival during the year in Vietnam. This activity aims to pray for favorable weather and bumper harvests, to honor national heroes and local deities, and to strengthen community solidarity through a joyful display of collective strength. Hoi An boat racing festival falls on February 28 in 2026, February 17 in 2027, February 6 in 2028, February 24 in 2029, and February 14 in 2030.
In Hoi An’s boat racing festival, there are about 8-9 teams, and each team represents a ward/commune of the city (Minh An, Thanh Ha, Cam Kim, Cam Thanh, Cam Ha, Cam An, Cam Chau, Son Phong, Tan An and Cam Pho). It draws a few thousands of locals and tourists every year.

How to Get to Hoi An Boat Race
In 2025, the boat race takes place on Thu Bon River near Kim Bong Carpentry Village. This village is located in Cam Kim Island, to the south of Hoi An city center.
To get to Kim Bong Carpentry Village from Hoi An’s Old Town, visitors can cycle, ride the motorbike, take a taxi or hire a private car. If like going by bike, we recommend riding through the iron bridge near Bel Marina Resort (called ‘Cau sat Cam Kim’) to save time and have a new experience. In addition, getting a boat from Bach Dang Pier is also possible. The price is not fixed, and it depends on the time of the day and number of passengers.
From other areas of Hoi An, the distance to Kim Bong Carpentry Village is 3-10km. Visitors can ride the bicycle/motorbike, hire a private car, or take a taxi. There is no public transportation to this village currrently.
From Da Nang center, the distance to Kim Bong Carpentry Village is around 30km. The drive by car is approximately 45 minutes long, and if like to ride the motorbike, it’ll be longer. If possible, consider joining a bike tour through rural villages, rice fields and craft communities.
