History of French Village in Ba Na Hills

In the 20th century, French people established a hill station in the area, and gave it the name ‘Ba Na Hills’ (because they saw banana trees when first came). The reason is that the climate here is perfect for relaxation and recreation. Until they left the country in 1945, they constructed many private villas, hotels, a wine cellar (now Debay wine cellar), post office,…as well as the car road from the foot of the mountain. Remains of old houses today are hidden away in the forests.

On 25th April 2015, the French Village in Ba Na Hills was opened. The name reminded me of the history of the place as a hill station for French people. At the time, 162 first hotel rooms were ready to welcome guests. They are in massive buildings lining stone-paved roads.

Over the years, on the open areas of the French Village, food & beverage stores, beer gardens, water fountains, statues, carnival rides, flowers,… are added. Nowadays, this is one of the busiest attractions in the whole Ba Na Hills.

Things to See & Do in French Village Ba Na Hills

Saint Denis Church

The Saint Denis Church is one of the landmarks in the French Village of Ba Na Hills. It faces a square (plaza) where all roads of the area meet. It reminds visitors of the architecture, religion, and atmosphere of an European town.

Saint Denis Church (aka ‘Ba Na Hills Church’) is inspired by the Basilica of Saint-Denis, the cathedral of Saint-Denis commune, a northern suburb of Paris, France. It has a Gothic architecture which originated from northern regions of France, and later widespread across Europe from the late 12nd century to the 16th century. Typical elements of this architectural style are all seen, such as stained-glass paintings, pointed arches, flying buttresses, rib vaults, vaulted ceiling, and gargoyles. No surprises, many travelers like coming here to sightsee, and take pictures. Local couples who are going to get married, will have some wedding photos with this grandeur church behind.

There is no service at Ba Na Hills Church. If looking for it on Sunday, visitors can go to Da Nang Cathedral or Pink Church (English mass available), or Hoi An Catholic Church. During the day, some live performances are held here, such as dancing, singing, circus, magic,…At night, this church is lit up by fairy lights, bringing a beautiful image of a magnificent and romantic city in Europe. In many months of the year, the mountain is misty in the evening, making it look so dreamy and tranquil. Those who stay overnight in the village, definitely love rolling around and having a couple of pictures.

The Helios Waterfall

The Helios Waterfall is in the front of the Beer Plaza restaurant. It opened in April 2022, and was constructed by the Frilli Gallery, a famous sculpture studio in Florence city of Italy (established in 1860). Until now, this magnificent fountain is still the first and only work of art built in Vietnam. There are 43 statues seen here, and each one depicts a different god and a different story in Greek mythology. Italian artists reproduced the ones which have been preserved in leading museums across the world. Visitors can see Helios (the ‘Sun God’), Apollo (the ‘God of Archery, Music and Dance, Truth and Prophecy, Healing and Disease,…), Bacchus (the ‘God of Agriculture, Wine and Fertility’), Venus (the ‘Goddess of Love and Beauty’), Athena (the ‘Goddess of Wisdom, War, Handicraft’),… The highlight is the sculpture portraying Helios God riding five horses, and it’s designed by Susan Leyland, a famed English artist. Amongst 40 statues, Venus goddess has 7 versions that simulate well-known ones all over the world. See more information & details

The best time to visit Helios Waterfall of Ba Na Hills is when it’s sunny or evening. In the sun, sculptures become golden, luxurious, and glorious. Plus fantastic water fountains, it’s great to see and take photos. At night, this building is lit by many lamps, making it fairy, dreamy, and attractive. Not far away, there is an open-air restaurant where visitors can try delicious barbecues, drink craft beers, enjoy cool temperatures with a view to Helios Waterfall.

The Medieval Fair

Around the Beer Plaza restaurant, the Medieval Fair has an outdoor beer garden where visitors can find mouth-watering barbecues, craft beers, and imported sausages, as well as exciting performances, games with a prize, and the Swing du Fantasie. This carnival ride has many seats, and each seat can carry 2 persons. Players need to be taller than 1,06m and kids from 1,06m to 1,3m must go with parents. A ride lasts 2 minutes, and is available from 9 am to evening. If the weather is rainy or foggy, it’s closed for safety reasons.

Near Taiga station, visitors can see a carousel which has a horse seat, rabbit seat, horse cart seat,… This ride requires players whose height is above 1,2m (kids from 0,86m to 1,2m must go with parents), and it lasts 2-3 mins. There is no extra fee to do.

Old Quarters of French Village

Every stone-paved road in the French Village leads to an old quarter where visitors will see a slice of exact France and familiar images about it. While getting lost in these quarters, there are many photo opportunities. Sometimes, a hidden restaurant or café or bakery or shophouse or teahouse is found. If stop and have a seat, visitors will enjoy a sense of peacefulness and the feeling that they have already in Europe!

At night, when the quarters are lit up by many lamps, the French Village is known as ‘Little Paris’ because it’s poetry, romantic and prosperous. On the square around Beer Plaza and Helios Waterfall, visitors can come to take a barbecue dish, craft beers and enjoy the cold air as well as live music in the surrounding area.

Ba Na Hills Brewery

Next to the Helios Waterfall, Ba Na Hills BreweryBa Na Hills Brewery – Things to See & Do in Da Nang, Vietnam is constructed to introduce visitors from all over the world, the production of different German craft beers. At its lowest levels, equipment and the process to make them are shown, allowing anybody to see/photograph. If lucky, brewmasters here will tell interesting stories about history, ingredients and steps they have done. At the highest levels, craft beers right from this brew house and a variety of food options are served, in a space with inspiration of Champa and European arts. No doubt, Ba Na Hills Brewery is a must see attraction if traveling to Ba Na Hills at night. See more information & details

Noel Plaza

This plaza is near the entrance gate of the French Village (visitors will see on the pathway from Louvre Station to Saint Denis Church). Here, grand shows take place, bringing the visitors amazing performances and great music of artists coming from different parts of the world. Most shows occur during the dry season (February to September).

Staying in Hotel at French Village

At the present, visitors can stay in the hotel at Ba Na Hills to enjoy the cool weather, fresh air and peacefulness in the mountain. The only hotel option is in French Village, next to Saint Denis Church. Its front desk lies within the Thac Toc Tien Station (a cable car station) at the foot of the mountain. After check in, visitors and luggages will be taken to the mountaintop by the cable car to L’Indochine Station. In the evening, hotel guests can dine out at hotel’s restaurants (both buffet and a la carte styles) or at Beer Plaza (an international buffet served here). One of the exclusive experiences for those who stay in Ba Na Hills’s hotel is the chance to take the earliest cable car to Golden Hands Bridge. How to Get to French Village in Ba Na Hills

The French Village of Ba Na Hills is on the top of a mountain, around 1,400 meters above sea level. To get there, visitors (and hotel guests) need to ride the cable car after coming to the park.

The shortest cable car to the French Village is the line from Thac Toc Tien Station to L’Indochine Station. It’s about 5 km long (ever held the Guinness record ‘the longest cable car in the world’). Its operation changes daily, so visitors just can check it on the day they come. Hotel guests always need to come to Thac Toc Tien Station for check in. This station is up the hill, and accessible by escalators and walking.

To go to the park (Ba Na Hills) from Da Nang, visitors can take a ride by car/taxi/van/bus or drive the motorbike (not recommended for those who have luggage). For a better price, we advise booking a roundtrip transfer to Ba Na Hills, instead of one way. The best route for riding the motorbike is Ba Na – Suoi Mo road, a wide and low traffic road. From the hotel, visitors just need to find the shortest/quickest way to see it and then follow it until the security man at Ba Na Hills tells to stop. Parking here is free.

From Hoi An, the best ways to reach Ba Na Hills (including the French Village) is by car and motorbike. It takes about 1 hour to get there by car. Driving the motorbike isn’t too difficult but it takes a bit to find the right directions on the way. Firstly, visitors need to follow the coastal road Lac Long Quan St until see Nam Ky Khoi Nghia St (in Da Nang), and then turn left, follow that road until can’t go anymore (due to construction). After that, follow QL1A highway and then Ba Na Suoi Mo road to the end.
