Better to Know about Bho Hoong Village

Bho Hoong Village is a Co Tu ethnic village and a community-based tourism spot near Da Nang and Hoi An in central Vietnam. This village is located on a low hill by the river (namely Song Kon, a key tributary of Vu Gia River).

The Co Tu people (or K’tu people) primarily reside in the mountainous regions of Da Nang and Hue cities in Central Vietnam. As of 2019, their population was 74,173. They are known for their strong connection to the Truong Son mountain range and their unique communal Guol house architecture.

It is primarily home to the Co Tu ethnic minority group, with over 90% of its roughly 700 residents belonging to this tribe. The village is celebrated for its efforts to preserve authentic traditional values, including the characteristic Guol communal house (the spiritual and cultural center), traditional wooden stilt houses, and unique handicrafts like brocade weaving (recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage).

The Guol House is the central, sacred communal building for the Co Tu ethnic group, serving as the spiritual and cultural heart of their village. It is a unique traditional stilt house, often architecturally resembling a turtle shell, and is the exclusive venue for major festivals, community meetings, and rites where village elders make important decisions. Women and unmarried girls are traditionally prohibited from entering, as the house symbolizes the village’s unity, strength, and connection to their gods and ancestors, often featuring prominent wooden carvings and a central “father pillar.”

The community actively engages in Community-Based Tourism (CBT), offering visitors experiences such as learning traditional crafts, tasting local cuisine (like bamboo-tube rice), watching the vibrant “Tung Tung Da Da” dance, and staying in traditional bungalows, all while directly supporting the local livelihood.

The Tung Tung Da Da dance is a vibrant, traditional communal performance of the Co Tu people, where men (Tung Tung) express strength and the aspiration to conquer, while women (Da Da) gracefully perform gestures of devotion and gratitude. Dancers move together in a circular formation to the powerful, rhythmic sounds of gongs and drums, symbolizing the balance of yin and yang and connecting the community with the universe and their ancestors.

Today, visitors can book a homestay in Bho Hoong Village as a stop in the journey to explore the Annamite Mountains (or Ho Chi Minh Trail) in Vietnam. Some motorbike tours depart from Hue, end at Da Nang or Hoi An, and include this village in the itinerary.

From the main road QL14G, visitors firstly need to walk across a hanging bridge which spans a peaceful river. On the right hand, can find an open square with the ceremonial stilt and the communal house. Around this communal house, there are houses of local families and fruit gardens. We recommend walking around Bho Hoong Village to see local daily life and the scenery of the area.

Today, it’s free to visit Bho Hoong Village, and to dive into the culture and life of Co Tu people (like stories, traditional knowledge, dances, musical instruments, ceremonies, food,…), visitors need to book a tour or a local guide. Inhabitants in the village have no problems when visitors talk and take photos with them (they speak Vietnamese or Co Tu languages only).
