History of Wax Museum at Ba Na Hills

The making life-size wax figures wearing real clothes, grew up from European royalty’s funeral practices, from the Middle Ages. Wax sculptures collection was seen in English and French courts.

On 11st July 2013, the Wax Museum in Ba Na Hills was opened. It became the first wax museum in Vietnam. At that time, there were only 25 statues. In the end of the same year, the collection was added up to around 50.

On 3rd August 2016, the Wax Museum in Sun World Ha Long Park was opened, becoming the second wax museum in Vietnam. It was also invested and owned by the Sun Group. There are more than 50 statues here, making it the largest wax museum in the country.

The world’s largest wax museum network today is named ‘Madame Tussauds’, including 21 places. She is a French artist widely known for her exquisite wax sculptures. Living from 1761 to 1850, she founded her own museum ‘Madame Tussauds’ in London. This was the oldest wax museum in the world (some scholars believe that it’s not).

Both Vietnam’s wax museums are not in Madam Tussauds museum network.

How to Make a Wax Figure?

In the last room of the Wax Museum of Ba Na Hills, how to produce wax statues is introduced. To deepen the understanding, visitors should stay in for a while, and follow stories. Here are steps to make a wax sculpture/statue:

Step 1: sculpting the figure

Firstly, the artist will make a skeleton by metal tube and wire, to support the clay and form the statue. On average, a sculptor needs 150 kilograms of clay for one sculpture. It takes about 6 weeks to complete the head alone. Anatomical knowledge is required to create exactly every bone, muscle, and tendon.

Step 2: moulding

The body is casted out in fiberglass, and a plaster mould in several parts is created for the clay head and the body. At the same time, the wax is heated up to 74oC, and then poured into the mould, and then stays overnight to be cool and harder. Both beeswax and Japan war will be used to make the head, plus colorings.

Sculptors need a 13-centimeters-thick wax layer, so the waste will be removed. About the weight, it’s needed about 5 kilograms of war for the head, and about 20 kilograms of wax for the body.

Step 3: face and head

To make eyes with exact details to real celebrities, sculptors need about 14 hours. They use acrylic resin and some little compositions. Gouache colors will be used to paint the iris of the eyes, and fine silk threads to make every single vein visible. Additionally, if possible, a dentist spends 28 hours to remake a set of teeth, with no differences.

Step 4: finishing the figure

All completed parts are put together. Stylists will choose real clothes to wear the statue, to express the exact personality, style or signatures of each figure.

From the beginning to end, a wax figure needs 3 to 4 months, and 10 different artists to complete.
