Things to See & Do in Van Lang Fishing Village
Along the riverside road of Van Lang Fishing Village, visitors will see plenty of basket boats (or round boat, circle boat) to embark on a trip to discover Bay Mau Water Coconut Forest. This is the largest nipa palm forest in the central Vietnam region. It served as the hiding place of Vietcong communists during the American war (1960s and 1970s). Within it, there is a dense network of small canals which flow into the Thu Bon River or the sea later. By that, the waterways are under tidal influence.
In the coconut forest, visitors will have the chance to do a tour by basket boat, the unique boat to central Vietnam. During it, can watch the life of people, see fisherman’s stilt houses and fishing boats, witness the performance of ‘spinning boats’ and join if interested, go crab fishing, karaoke singing on a floating island, watch how the locals catch fishes by a net, listen to local folk songs, etc. This boat tour is a must do if visiting Van Lang Fishing Village and Hoi An in general. At places along the waterfront, local people sell local products, including sweet grilled/baked coconut cake (banh dua nuong) or sweet water coconut soup (che dua nuoc). Both are worth trying and buying as well as cheap. During hot months, the sweet water coconut soup with ice is a favourite food/refreshment of both locals and visitors. Nowhere else in the area, except this village, it’s sold.
Another thing to do in Van Lang Fishing Village is visiting one of coffee shops by canals and watch the world. They serve mainly Vietnamese style coffees to drink, such as ca phe sua da (coffee with condensed milk and ice), ca phe muoi (salt coffee), ca phe trung (egg coffee), ca phe dua (coconut coffee), more. The view to the palm-lined rivers that are busy by basket boats and visitors, is also a plus point. For those who love watching local life, do not miss a riverside café in Van Lang Fishing Village.
Some households in Van Lang Fishing Village have a class to teach visitors how to make a lantern with a pre-made bamboo frame, or do a herbal foot massage at a cheap price. Roam about the village, it’s possible to find these experiences anyway.
