History & Architecture of Tra Kieu Marian Shrine

Tra Kieu Marian Shrine is on the Jade Hill (Buu Chau Hill). This 60-meters-high hill lies in the heart of the ancient capital city of Champa kingdom (named Simhapura or ‘City of Lion’, from the 6th to 8th centuries). In 1928 and 1928, French archaeologists from the French School of the Far East, excavated some spots here and then found remains of large buildings. Fine stone sculptures (such as Tra Kieu Pedestal) were brought to Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture for preservation and exhibition. Currently, visitors still can see the earthen walls of Tra Kieu Citadel (southern and eastern walls). In 2013, it’s recognized to be national heritage site due to its historical and archaeological importance.

In the first half of the 17th century, some local families in Tra Kieu area followed Catholicism that was introduced by Portuguese missionaries. This area was one of the earliest places in Vietnam where the religion was received.

In 1885, Tra Kieu Marian Shrine became a site of memory for local Catholics resistance against those who anti them (within Can Vuong movement (‘Aid the King movement’). In this event, the Our Lady appeared and saved them from being killed.

On the top of the Jade Hill, visitors will see a small church (known as ‘Tra Kieu Mountain Church’ or ‘Mountain Church’). It’s established in 1898 and in 1927, it’s rebuilt by stone and brick. In 1963, the current church was constructed with a design from Vietnamese architect Ngo Viet Thu (who designed the Independence Hall in Ho Chi Minh city). In the front of the church, there is a fresh water well.

Because Tra Kieu Mountain Church sits on the top of the hill, the views from here are stunning. Visitors will see villages, rice fields, mountains, farms as well as remains of Simhapura capital of Champa kingdom. This is one of reasons why non-Catholic people still want to visit the church.

On 31st May annually, Tra Kieu Marian Shrine attracts thousands of Catholic pilgrims who come to commemorate and honor the Our Lady of Tra Kieu.
