History & Architecture of Thoai Ngoc Hau Temple in Da Nang

Thoai Ngoc Hau Temple in Da Nang was constructed in March 2009, to commemorate the 194th death anniversary of Thoai Ngoc Hau (or Nguyen Van Thoai), a Vietnamese military administrator. He was born in 1761 in An Hai village in present-day Son Tra district, Da Nang city. In 1777, he and his mother left the hometown and moved to the Mekong Delta (or Southwest region of Vietnam). At age of 16, he followed Nguyen Anh princess and then worked in his government (Nguyen dynasty). In 1818, he led the construction of a 30-kilometers-long canal from the Mekong River to the Gulf of Thailand. In 1829, he passed away in Chau Doc. Local people and the king constructed a mausoleum for him at the foot of Sam Mountain, not too far away from Ba Chua Xu Temple (Lady Temple), the holiest temple in the area. A mountain and the district where it’s located, were named ‘Thoai Son’ (or Thoai’s Mountain’). The canal was also called ‘Thoai Ha’ (or Thoai’s Canal).

About the architecture, Thoai Ngoc Hau Temple in Da Nang has a temple to worship Thoai Ngoc Hau and ancestors of the village, a moon-shaped lake, a statue of Thoai Ngoc Hau, and lots of trees. On the 6th day of the 6th lunar month every year, a ceremony to commemorate him by local residents and city leaders.

In June 2007, Thoai Ngoc Hau Temple was honored to be national heritage site. In Da Nang, the road going from Tran Thi Ly Bridge to My Khe Beach is named after Thoai Ngoc Hau.
